When Is The Right Time?

Q. Hi Jordan!

My husband and I always thought we weren't the "kids" type, but lately that has really changed. And now we're just sort of struggling with the "when."

Has it been totally worth it, the "not being able to do whatever you want whenever you want to" portion? My husband and I have been married for so long now and have our own groove, and I'm super worried I'm going to end up resenting a kid for messing with my blissfully carefree life. No more indie shows in crowded bars with 10 minutes notice; that sort of thing.

In short: how did you guys know you were ready? Did you struggle with the things that you'd have to give up, or were you totally on board?

Good Times

The photo above illustrates the sum total of my productivity this weekend: I marinated* and managed to cook chicken tenderloins (and grilled zucchini).

Well, I guess that's not entirely true: I also managed to keep a very energetic two-year-old alive, fed, and relatively happy while being unable to open my eyes without experiencing searing pain in my left temple (where every single one of my sinuses is apparently located), so I guess that's an accomplishment in and of itself.

You know what's really not fun? Having the flu**. Extra-not-fun: having the flu and being responsible for a person who doesn't understand the words "Mama needs to go be sick now, I'll play dinosaurs in a moment." Extra-extra-not fun: doing this alone because your husband is out of town for the weekend (...Kendrick? ...Come back?***).

Career Confusion And Getting It Done

Q. Hi Jordan:

You've alluded several times to the fact that career time in your 20s was about figuring out what you wanted to do, not necessarily...doing it. My twenties are shaping up to be a complicated mess...and I'm wondering if you could help.

My original goal was to be a writer, but a few jobs into the media world I began to question this choice. I gave up writing to go back to school, and now I'm feeling like I never should have done so. Simply stated: I feel like I was put on this planet to write, but I have no earthly clue how to go about doing this.

Up All Night

The most important thing to know about the photo above is that it was taken at 11:45PM, which is officially the latest I have been awake of my own volition on either coast in approximately three years.

The second most important thing to know is that those shoes I'm wearing are $19.99. On Saturday I had half an hour to kill at the mall before my ride to the airport arrived, and I spotted these bright-gold pumps - which aren't too dissimilar from a pair of Giuseppe Zanottis I've been gazing at for awhile - sitting in the window of a random sports-shoe chain store. $19.99?! I mean...come on. Done.

Now, about our night, because it was an unusual one for me. My flight was arriving at 8:55, so I thought that kind of put us out of the running for doing anything much on Saturday night, but when I told Francesca that I didn't mind if we just grabbed take-out and went home her response was, "Oh, no worries, we won't even need to leave my apartment until 11:45", because the place we were going - Giorgio's at The Standard - doesn't even really really get going until midnight.
