Books to Help You Escape Right Now

Hi all, Olivia, Ramshackle Glam’s editorial director here; Jordan’s still away, so I’m hopping on today for a quick guest post! If you’re anything like me, you’re currently working overtime to keep your anxiety at bay, so I’ve been making the effort to put my phone down at night and read books. I thought I’d share my top book finds of recent times in case you also need something to help your mind escape at night. What have you been reading lately? Tell us in the comments! PS. Need some more book suggestions? Check out this post, and this one, too!

1/10

Summer of '69

I’m a huge fan of Elin Hilderbrand’s books as an escape method, and this epic novel about a family in the summer of 1969 on Nantucket is no exception. Dealing with issues from race to gender to affairs, you’ll fall in love with this family and novel.

2/10

The Admissions

Meg Mitchell Moore is a fantastic writer, and I quickly fell in love with The Admissions. What happens when you work your whole life to get into an Ivy League school…and then life happens? You won’t want to stop reading The Admissions at night and feel emotions for every character in the family.

3/10

Minor Dramas and Other Catastrophes

What happens when you mix a helicopter mom with social media? Chaos ensues in this gripping novel that’s told from every character’s perspective.

4/10

She Has Her Mother's Laugh

If you’re in the mood for an interesting non-fiction book, I’m loving the epic story on genetics throughout history. It’s truly a well-written and fascinating read on how genetics work in ways we never thought about.

5/10

Boys and Sex

Confession: I just ordered this Peggy Orenstein book last night, but it’s only because I listened to her on Armchair Expert and had to buy it. As the mom of two boys, this sounds fascinating and I can’t wait to delve in. She’s also the author of Girls and Sex, if you’re interested in reading from that angle, too.

6/10

No Visible Bruises

Yes, this is a heavy topic, however Rachel Louise Snyder handles this hard topic with such grace and education, she truly takes you on a journey with her amazing writing style, first-hand stories, and eye-opening statistics. This is actually the best book I’ve ever read, as hard as some of the stories are to read, they’re life-changing.

7/10

Fleishman Is In Trouble

This is one of Jordan’s favorite books, so much so that she sent me a copy! I couldn’t put this book down and told everyone I know to read it. It’s about marriage, women, sex, and mental health. A must-read. You can see Jordan’s review here.

8/10

The Wives

I picked this book up off the shelves at my local bookstore (shoutout to Book Revue), and it’s GRIPPING. What happens when a man has three wives and they don’t know the other wives…until something happens and they do? It’s a great read to escape mentally.

9/10

The Tattooist of Auschwitz: A Novel

This is Jordan’s pick for must-read-to-escape-right-now! This beautiful, illuminating tale of hope and courage is based on interviews that were conducted with Holocaust survivor and Auschwitz-Birkenau tattooist Ludwig (Lale) Sokolov—an unforgettable love story in the midst of atrocity.

10/10

The Big Activity Book for Anxious People

And, of course, if you’re feeling anxious, pick up The Big Activity Book for Anxious People, which is not only fun to read, but actually does take your mind off of the current state of the (frightening) world.
