What We Wore: One Night In Vegas

Francesca and I live on opposite coasts now, so we don’t get to see each other nearly as often as we’d like. And so when we do get to see each other…we like to do it up.

Pretend we’re still living together in L.A. and thinking about things like which bathing suit to wear on a Tuesday afternoon.

Put on sequins and red lipstick and get into a little trouble.

(Oh, okay…we got in no trouble at all. We tried, I swear, but after sacrificing ten bucks to the slot machines we decided to just cut our losses and window-shop for shoes along the Grand Canal.)

On me: Haute Hippie dress (similar); TopShop Longline Sequin Bralet (similar); Le Icon Pochette purse c/o Dareen Hakim (more shots here); hoop earrings and bangles c/o INC; Nine West patent leather heels; rings c/o Sophia Forero.

On Francesca: Napoleon Perdis Enhancer (a highlighting crayon that you apply on the bridge of your nose and your cheekbones to reflect the light); H&M jeans (similar); TopShop cropped tank.

How-To: Wear Snakeskin Pants

I like snakeskin pants a whole lot – so much I even wore them while 7,825,934 months pregnant.

This is how I wore them for a JC Penney shoot a few months back (that’s a Buffalo jeans pair pictured with my own t-shirt, Betsey Johnson heels, and Hannah Warner and Ippolita necklaces).

But it’s just a fact: snakeskin pants can be tricky, because seriously: that’s a whole lot of pant. Similarly to camouflage pants, the key is to keep the rest of your outfit relatively simple, and to play with the balance of tough and feminine by adding pretty extras like strappy heels, colorful clutches, and layered jewelry.

How-To: Snakeskin Pants

More Ideas:

- A black, white, or grey tee always looks great, but try layering on a chambray button-down; denim and snakeskin make a perfect pairing.

- If your outfit is head-to-toe neutral, add a little color with an emerald green or poppy red handbag.

- Keep your accessories relatively simple; the snakeskin is all the statement you need.

- As the weather warms up, try cuffing them to a 3/4 length and pairing them with simple flats.

- If snakeskin pants aren’t your thing, try playing with a snakeskin accessory (and go ahead and treat it as if it’s a neutral, pairing it with everything from brights to black-and-white).

Coming Up Roses

What I wore for Mother’s Day dinner (at our local hibachi place, of course): a simple summer dress with fun details that I picked up for $19.50 at the mall, and then lightened up even more with white and rose-gold accessories.

We chose hibachi because we like it – obviously; that stuff is delicious - but also because convincing a toddler to sit still for the entire duration of a meal can be tough…but is made exponentially easier by the presence of flying eggs and fire.

My favorite part: the bright-pink lipstick (YSL Rouge Volupte Shine in Devotion). I love the pairing of mint green and bright pink – so fresh and springy.

I don’t happen to own a rose-gold skinny belt, but if I did that would’ve been a nice addition, as well. Just saying.

Two off-topic tangents:

1. Kendrick bought me a tomato plant for Mother’s Day. I put it in a pot near our door for now (later on my plan is to put it in the garden, assuming I can erect a fence around it capable of deterring the local wildlife). Any tips for tomato-growing?

2. I love my Spirit Animal. Every garden should have one.

On me: Forever 21 dress; heels c/o Kate Hudson for Ann Taylor (available in stores May 20); sunglasses and Spirit Animal via T.J. Maxx; Brahmin bag; Kyler by Joy O. earrings; YSL Rouge Volupte Shine lipstick in Devotion.

Preview: Kate Hudson Capsule Collection For Ann Taylor

I did an interview last week during which the reporter asked me who my “celebrity style icon” was, and I was sort of flummoxed. I even almost automatically blurted out “Audrey Hepburn” just because she seems to be the de facto “style icon” who people mention in interviews, even though there are probably few celebrities on the planet whose style resembles mine less.

I do not do ballet flats and pearls particularly well, nor am I pixieishly adorable. C’est la vie.

So I free-associated for a minute, thinking about which red carpet dresses pop instantly into my mind as all-time favorites, and came up with Cate Blanchett’s 1999 John Galliano, Cameron Diaz’s 2002 Ungaro, Michelle Williams’ 2006 Vera Wang, Kate Hudson in that white dress, Kate Hudson in that gold dress, Kate Hudson in that flowery Valentino she wore to the Oscars that one time, and Kate Hudson every time she’s ever appeared on The Late Show. Or anywhere, generally.

So: Kate Hudson it was.

I already knew that Kate Hudson was the face of Ann Taylor, but even better: she recently designed a capsule collection for the brand.

And it’s beautiful.

(Kendrick made me do the peace sign thing.)

On me: Blouse, necklace and heels from the Kate Hudson Capsule Collection for Ann Taylor; Ann Taylor clutch and nail polish; Sophia Forero ruby ring; sunglasses and jeans via T.J. Maxx.

The Kate Hudson Capsule Collection will be available in Ann Taylor stores beginning May 20, 2013.

On The Bright Side

There are rules that you’re supposed to follow if you want to wear denim-on-denim. I’ve even written about them; they include things like making sure the denim pieces are different weights and colors, breaking up the look with pops of color, et cetera et cetera.

But honestly? To me, the key to this look is dealing with the fact that you’re wearing head-to-toe denim and maybe overdoing it just a bit. Nothing wrong with that.

How I broke up this particular denim-on-denim look: with brown leather accents (and a touch of floral), and – most importantly – a shot of neon. Ooh, those heels.

The jeans, by the way, deserve special mention because they’re so old that I remember buying them right when “bootcut” first became a thing. Those of you under 25 probably have no idea what I’m talking about, but at the risk of sounding like An Old, trust me: there was a time before you could walk into any old store and find a pair of low-rise flares. It was the time of straight-leg-bordering-on-tapered jeans, following shortly on the heels of the Acid Wash Era, and when I found this particular Frankie B. pair I paid a fairly ridiculous amount of money for them (despite the fact that I was maybe 18, and certainly should not have been spending ridiculous amounts of money on jeans) just because I thought they were the best jeans I’d ever seen.

And well over a decade later, I continue to think that might be true. I recently sort of rediscovered them because I was thinking of buying a pair of super-distressed jeans, and then realized: oh. I own them already. And they’re not just distressed…they’re authentically distressed! Whee.

On me: Sanctuary Clothing button-down; ancient Frankie B. jeans; Sunny Isle Tote c/o Alexandra Satine; green tourmaline necklace c/o Melinda Maria; Sophia Forero ring; heels and sunglasses via T.J. Maxx; haircut by Karmela Lozina.

Daytime, Nighttime, Any Hour

…Anyone pick up on the song reference?

Any Dirty Dancing fans out there?

…Anyone?

As you can see, I cut off all my hair.

It was time for a change: I’ve had it super-long for a year or so now, and I wanted to lighten up for summer. The inspiration: Michelle Pfeiffer in Scarface mixed with a dash of my mom in the ’70s. Karmela gave me a long blunt-cut bob with bangs, and I love it; I feel so much more…chilled-out. Less fussy. More springy.

Speaking of “springy”, how perfect is this weather right now (on the East Coast, anyway)? It’s absolutely the most fun weather to get dressed for, I think, because you get to wear what you want, rather than wearing whatever makes you less miserably hot/cold.

And what I want to wear – obviously – is a plaid shirt and jeans. All the time.

Best part: once night falls, all you have to do with an outfit like this is lose the plaid and add a little sparkle.

And fun heels. For fun.

On me: Vintage Lace Underpinning Shirt and Women’s Utility Shirt c/o Eddie Bauer (Fall 2013 collection); RayBan sunglasses; J. Brand jeans; J. Crew Edie handbag; green tourmaline necklace c/o Melinda Maria; Hannah Warner bone ring; Nine West bow flats; ROXoxox anklet; Ann Taylor belt and heels.

For All The Evenings

You know how some people have a shoe thing? I don’t really. I mean, I’d hardly kick a pair of silver Jimmy Choos out of bed, but honestly: fancy footwear stresses me out because you have to…you know…walk in it. On the ground.

Purses? Now that’s my thing. I adore them, I collect them, it’s rare that I leave a flea market or vintage store without some new find or another.

So it’s sort of weird that the one purse I’ve never owned is a black evening purse. For years now, whenever I’m headed out to someplace fancy I’ve ended up defaulting either to a daytime bag (because whatever), or this crazy over the top bedazzled gold thing that a friend gave me years ago when I lived in LA and that is extremely wild and fun, but not exactly sophisticated.

I had an elegant black purse for a minute, but it was beaded and from approximately 1827, and when I took it out with me it ended up disintegrating almost immediately. I’ve kept an eye out for the right evening bag for awhile now, but haven’t found anything perfect – I wanted smallish (but big enough for my phone), black leather, classic shape, interesting details, slim gold chain strap, and not-two-thousand-dollars.

Hello.

PurseLe Icon Pouchette c/o Dareen Hakim.

Also pictured on me: Gap t-shirt, Paige Denim cutoffs, Kenneth Jay Lane necklace, sandals c/o Crocs, earrings c/o Melinda Maria.

(Despite the fact that I really did wear this purse out almost every night on our trip, this is the second-best photo I was able to get of an outfit that included it. Our son has discovered an obsession with soccer/basket/whatever balls, and there was a lot of wrangling going on.)
