Weekend Snapshots

Tell me that doesn’t look like the best thing on the planet. That’s the brunch pizza at Gina La Fornarina, which I write about…oh, all the time…and it’s what I ate for my birthday brunch on Saturday, post-playground excursion. (If you go, the brunch pizza is no longer on the menu, but they’ll still make it for you if you ask nicely.)

Following an afternoon nap, we stopped over at my parents’ place for some wine before heading out to dinner at another one of my favorite spots, Trattoria Casa di Isacco (full review here).

What makes dinner at this place so fun is mostly the owner, Isacco, who runs between tables depositing little plates of delicious things (like this wild boar, which is UNBELIEVABLE rolled in soft bread with a little manchego).

For Memorial Day, we headed to the Jersey Shore to visit Francesca and her family.

This is some good beach food, right here. (Lightly toasted pita filled with avocado, tomato, hard cheddar, and salt.)

I needed a day like this one. Good for the soul and all. (Or it was good for mine, anyway: Indy was a little dubious about the whole sand-and-sea thing, as you can see in this picture. He’s also sort of petrified of grass. We’re working on it.)

Perfect summer dinner: grilled skirt steak sliced over arugula salad…

…and homemade ice cream in vintage apple bowls.

Just A Little Shout-Out To Two Of My Favorite New Makeup Discoveries

Elizabeth Arden’s Liquid Eyeliner in Brown and Lipstick Queen Saint Eden Lipstick.

Both of which I wore to the beach today in an effort to be all retro-glam…

and both of which stayed put through four hours of sand and sun, and one very big wipe-out.

That’s Right: I Hung With The Polar Bears

This was amazing.

Seriously.

I’ve done a few adventure-seeking-ish things in my life (bungee jumping, hangliding, riding motorcycles, scuba diving)…but this one was definitely among my favorites.

Lucky You, You’re Going On Vacation And Get To Wear Pretty Dresses

This picture, taken in the Caymans just about a year ago, gives me heart palpitations, I want to be there so much. But this is the year for enormous life changes, not for lazy days by the sea. Ah, well.

But you! You might be going on vacation somewhere sunny, and that is fantastic. For you.

So what do you pack?

This, basically. You can’t go wrong with white, black, grey, and a touch of neon.

But, like RG reader Lily, you might also want to take along a handful of pretty, summery dresses that can be worn while shopping in town, drinking pina coladas on the beach, or out for some nighttime dancing.

Jordan, I’m heading to Hawaii on the first vacation with the new love in 2 weeks. I want cute, casual beachy dresses for the trip…and affordability is key. Any suggestions? -Lily

Yup!

For a casual daytime look, these are three of my favorites. That blue is just spectacular, the stripes are too cute (picture that dress with a woven bag and espadrilles), and there’s nothing like a little frill and floral to get you in a beachy mood. Plus, all of these dresses can easily be worn simply, or dressed up with jewelry for a night out (oh, and I’d add a braided leather or rope belt to the striped and floral dresses).

These are straight-up party-in-the-sand dresses: so romantic with beach-tousled hair, simple makeup, and flat metallic sandals. I especially love the dress on the right: the mustard-and-teal combo is so chic, and the sexy length is balanced out and kept stylish by the 3/4-length sleeves.

Product info after the jump.

Saturday / Coney Island

Saturday was Coney Island Day: always an excellent day for us, and one that we will likely be repeating a couple more times before fall hits (most certainly for the Coney Island Rockabilly Festival over Labor Day weekend, totallylookingforwardtoityay).

Coney Island is surprisingly easy to get to: about an hour on the N or Q trains from most points in Manhattan (the R has too many stops; don’t take it), and once you’re there, you’re there. Like, right in the middle of total and utter bliss.

My Coney Island Must-Dos:

- Ride the Spook-o-Rama

- Jump around in the water fountain/palm tree-thing on the beach with the kids

- Stop into Ruby’s Old Tyme Bar & Grill (on the boardwalk) for a beer and fabulous jukebox action

- Eat a Nathan’s hot dog with sauerkraut

- Play that dart-throwing game (I won Lucy’s new best friend Louis, pictured below), Skee-Ball, and Dance Dance Revolution

- Embarrass self at Whack-A-Mole (score: seven)

- Visit Coney Island Craft Lagers to learn how to home-brew a dry-hopped pilsner (buy them HERE)

- Check out the Circus Sideshow

Clockwise from top left: On the N; Kendrick in Ruby’s; at Nathan’s, waiting for my dog; Skee-Ball; Coney Island Pilsner; my boy Louis (won from throwing darts with incredible, spot-on accuracy).
