2-Minute Makeup: Eyeliner, Clean & Simple

I got an email the other day from RG reader Katie, who said, “When I don’t wear eyeliner on the bottom, I feel naked almost, and it makes me insecure as strange as that sounds. But everyone I look at online doesn’t seem to wear any bottom liner and they look beautiful. Do you have any suggestions on how to lighten up my eye makeup?”

I totally get this. For over a decade – every since college – I felt completely undressed and washed-out if I didn’t rim my lower eyelid with black liner, like my eyes were disappearing into my face.

I wore my makeup like this. Every day.

And then I got pregnant, and started wanting to look more “fresh” than “glamorous,” and decided to give a liner-free lower lid a spin…and what do you know? As it turns out, too-heavy eye makeup ages your whole face; especially as you get older, a lighter touch looks far more elegant and pretty. Nowadays, I don’t even touch my lower lid with liner, and just alternate between the three different styles of upper-lid liner shown in the video, depending on my mood.

2-Minute Makeup: Five Tips For Red Lips

I used to find red lipstick pretty intimidating, and certainly didn’t consider it something to wear during the daylight hours. You may have noticed that that’s changed, though, and now I wear it…sort of all of the time. There’s just nothing like a little red lipstick to make you look (and feel) instantly pulled-together and sprightly.

Above, some of my top tips for red lips.

The other stuff I’m wearing: H&M denim shirt, Swati Jr* necklace, NARS Cairo eyeshadow.

P.S. Apologies for the weird lighting shifts in this video; the sun kept popping behind clouds.

2-Minute Makeup: No-Time New Mama Beauty

In this video, I go over my everyday makeup routine (less than two minutes, start-to-finish).

But in the past three months, you know what the number-one beauty tip I’ve picked up is? You know that saying “An ounce of prevention equals a pound of cure?” Well, Benjamin Franklin originally coined it while talking about fire-prevention (true story; I am full of fun factoids today)…but it’s something to keep in mind when it comes to things like your hair, skin, and nails, as well. Putting a little extra effort into keeping things nice and healthy does wonders for time-saving in the long-term, because it means that you look more or less A-OK with very little accoutrement.

Some of my favorite ways to keep things in order:

Hair: Use a shampoo and conditioner tailored to your hair’s specific needs (moisture-replenishing, damage-repairing, etc), and enhance the effects with a deep-conditioning treatment at least once a week (this makes an enormous difference, I swear).

Skin: Do not go to sleep with your makeup on. I’m going to say it again: Do not go to sleep with your makeup on. This is a lesson that I learned the hard way, and it is an important one. Also: use moisturizer and eye cream like it is your job, and drink water, drink water, drink water.

Nails: If you can’t get to the salon, a quick file-and-buff will keep your fingertips nice and neat-looking. And if you absolutely adore the look of polish, I insist that you try a gel manicure (you can even DIY it to save money).

2-Minute Beauty: Simple TopKnot (With A Twist)

When I posted the shots from our trip up the Hudson a couple of weeks ago, a reader commented below the post asking me if I wouldn’t mind doing a tutorial on that hairdo. And what I said was nope, of course I wouldn’t mind…but it’s really just a loosened-up topknot with a couple of simple twists that make it a little more interesting than the kind of thing you’d wear to, say, the gym.

But then I got to thinking…you know, they’re kind of good little twists. Kinda easy and fun.

2-Minute Makeup: Navy & Gold Eye

One of my favorite looks for fall, the navy-and-gold eye can be worn subtly for day, or drama-ed up for night (just use a gold shadow with more sparkle, like NARS Silent Night), and go more heavy-handed with the navy).

2-Minute Makeup: Navy & Gold Eye

1. Apply a gold shadow with a little shimmer all over lid and up to brow bone.

2. Using a small brush, apply the same gold shadow under the lower lash line.

3. Using a wider brush, blend navy shadow into crease. Blend well, but don’t make the color too diffuse – you want the gold and the navy to be distinct from one another.

4. Using a small flat-tipped brush, apply a small amount of navy to outer corners of lower lash line.

5. Apply a thin line of black liquid liner (winged out at the ends, if desired).

6. Apply a thick gold pencil to inner corners of eyes to make them pop.

7. Mascara!
