How-To: Printed Skirt

Q. Hi Jordan,

I have a style question that I’m hoping you can help me with. I have a habit of buying skirts that I love in all shapes, prints, and colors…but then I never know what to pair them with. I usually resort to a solid t-shirt or tank top, which is fine, but is there a way to make them more interesting for both work and play?

Thanks so much!

A. You know, the thing about “interesting” pieces (by which I mean printed, colorful, or adventurously cut pieces like your collection of skirts), is that sometimes there’s a tendency to pair them with otherwise “safe” stuff: plain tees, simple shoes, minimal accessories, etc. I get it: when faced with a leopard pencil skirt, sometimes it’s easier to just grab that black button-down and be done with it.

But once you get over the mix-and-match hump, your closet options open up exponentially.

And getting dressed becomes so much fun.

How-To: Printed Skirt

Take, for example, this adorable polka-dot skirt from J.Crew. Sure, you could wear it with a white tee and a denim jacket for day, or with a solid-color tank and blazer for night…but how about a slouchy pink button-down for weekend, a shocking emerald blouse with contrast detailing for work…and a sort of Western-Rocker chick vibe for your sunday afternoon date?

See? Fun.

…Though is there really truly anything hotter than a woman in a funky skirt and a white, sort-of-slouchy white collared shirt? Either of the Boyfriend variety (like so: http://media1.onsugar.com/files/2012/09/36/5/166/1668379/8e4ea98afd02f609_Billy_Reid_RS13_2814.xxxlarge/i/Billy-Reid-Spring-2013.jpg) or with a funky studded collar or something, and with chunky accessories and some tan leather accessories?

    The answer is no.

I have a similar issue with printed skirts. I love Maiocchi skirts which have bold floral and Asian designs, but always pair them with simple black Ts and singlets. I think polka dots are an easier print to mix it up with. A-line below the knee bright floral number? A bit harder to pair up. Oh well, I’ll keep looking.

Maybe try a neutral knit sweater with a wide stripe?

I think pretty much any print can be mixed with another print so long as the colors work together and the pattern size is different (eg large florals on bottom, small polka dots on top).

Thank you! Such a good idea/excuse to go shopping.
