How-To: Dress For An “Event”

Q. Hi Jordan,

My husband just informed me that we were invited to an NYC “Event-Space Opening” at which I will be meeting his entire company…for the first time.

I’m utterly confused about how to dress.

What does one wear to make her husband proud and still feel confident when she has no clue what the event entails?!

Thank you!!

Olivia

A. Ah, the dreaded “what to wear to an ‘event'” question!

I go to a fair number of these things on behalf of RG, and I know that getting ready for an event with an unspecified dress code at a location that you’re unfamiliar with can be…tricky.

In the past, there have been a couple of times when I’ve shown up at events dressed in my very favorite shorts and a tee (hey, the invite said “casual!” and it was during the day!)…only to find a room full of beautifully decked out ladies in cocktail dresses and sparkly things. I was a little uncomfortable, to say the least.

So: when it comes to events, I have learned to err on the side of classic and dressy-without-being-overdressed.

Here’s what I’d do: go for neutrals with pops of bright color (so you stand out – in a good way – in the all-black crowd) and comfortable shapes (so you can feel relaxed while getting to know your husband’s colleagues)…paired with awesome shoes, to-die-for jewelry, and a streamlined clutch.

A little mod.

A lot chic.
