Hearts & Flowers

For my final Geox style post, I thought I’d take on a little challenge.

You know by now that I’m all about extending your wardrobe through the seasons (why not? more to wear, etc.) and so for this post I took three very distinctly summery-y pieces – a white chiffon mini, a orange silk slipdress, and a floral bed jacket – and played with ways to make them work in the winter. And of course every outfit also features a pair of cozy-as-pie boots (all flat! So into flats lately).

Look 1

My first thought was to pair this white chiffon-and-lace mini with a big, chunky sweater…but then I thought: been there, done that. And so, oddly enough, I decided to throw on another majorly summery item: a white linen blazer. White on white after Labor Day? Yes. Because once you add a thick scarf (with pom-poms!), heavy tights, and snow-day boots with furry linings, all of a sudden you’re far more ski bunny than beach babe.

And one should always wear ridiculous sunglasses whenever possible, and pose ridiculously when doing so. This is a fact.

Look 2

Oh, this dress. Which isn’t even a dress, really…it’s a slip. I picked it up at the Salvation Army years ago in the lingerie section for just a couple of bucks, and in the summer of ’09 it was my favorite thing in my closet (I usually paired it with a pale-grey blazer). It’s way too big, and the armholes go down to somewhere around my waist, but covered up with a jacket or sweater and given shape with a belt it’s quite cute, really.

Since it’s such a summery fabric, I added lots of layers to create visual interest and…you know, physical warmth (rooftops can get chilly). A patterned silk blouse under a denim jacket, a richly patterned scarf, deliciously warm, comfortable, chocolate-colored boots, and floofy hair all made the dress look fall-perfect.

Tip: When layering a pattern under a solid, roll up the sleeves of the patterned layer over the solid layer to create pretty cuffs and show off a little extra flair.

Look 3

This is a pretty un-me outfit.

But I like it!

It’s sort of like my take on the College Girl From Connecticut Who Rides Horses…ever so slightly preppy, but also very romantic. I feel like I should be carrying Jane Austen books and making my way to the dining hall through piles of crunching leaves in these shots.

So how to make florals work in the winter? Shoot for a vintage-y, romantic look with autumnal hues (rust, navy, hunter green, etc) rather than tropical ones, and pair your floral item with pieces in cozy textures (like corduroy and heavy knits). Here, I’m wearing that flowery bed jacket with a high-necked, lacy cream blouse that used to belong to my mom, cozy corduroys, a hat that my Nanny Ruth knitted for me, and a pair of flat brown boots perfect for crunching the aforementioned leaves.

P.S. If you’re wondering why my hair is no longer the pretty color it was following my mini-makeover, it’s because these photos were taken a couple of weeks ago, at the same time as this series.
