Republic & Riesling

Friday afternoon, I met Daily Beast contributor Karen at Republic, in Union Square, for a little white wine and gossip. This was my first time meeting Karen – she’s usually based in New Delhi – and she is both fantastic and fascinating.

Republic is one of my top go-to restaurants for an inexpensive, (usually) quick, delicious meal: the sauteed pork dumplings pictured above were just $4 (!), and plentiful enough for a light lunch. What they’re best-known for, though, are their noodle dishes, which you can order with broth or without (I recommend with). And…dah dah dahhh!…they’ve just added banh mi ($7) to the menu, which means that I will be back. Soon.

Post-Republic, we took a stroll through the Union Square Greenmarket, where I picked up some gorgeous heirlooms, corn, and radishes. Add some chicken thighs and red potatoes, and you have a delicious, fresh-from-the-farmstand dinner for just around $15.

Hi Jordan! Your skin looks so naturally-glowing here. I know you may have addressed your skin care regime at some other point in time, but would you care to share with me the products that you find most effective? I'm actually trying to work with my own skin (which is combination oily and dry), and I have not really found anything that has given me *consistent* results. Many thanks.

Thank you so much! You know, for the past few months I've actually been feeling pretty bad about my skin – I've noticed wrinkles starting, and have been getting breakouts and some dryness – and a few weeks ago I changed my regimen and it made an immediate difference (a lot of my friends have even commented on it).

The major change is that I started using products geared specifically to anti-aging instead of my usual Cetaphil/moisturizer/eye cream. I've started washing my face with Cor soap, which is awesome, and in the evening I use Strivectin's face cream and eye cream (they gave me samples to try out for the shoot I did last week, and they are GREAT). In the morning I use Clinique's anti-puffing eye serum and Oil of Olay Total Effects Anti-Aging moisturizer. Since I'm being totally unscientific by changing a lot about my skincare routine at once, it's hard to say what made the difference, but there you go :)

Thank you Jordan for your recommendations! With so many choices of skincare out there I am having a tough time picking the products that work for me. If you don't mind, I would like to ask you some other questions I am contemplating (and I understand if you, too, don't have a scientific answer; really, I'm interested in your opinions, so please feel free to answer in any way you see fit!). Okay, so here goes, my questions: (1) Do you think there is a significant difference between over-the-counter products you can find at your local drugstore versus more expensive designer skincare companies. To bring brands into the equation, I am thinking about trying a Shiseido serum that targets skin discoloration. It's one of the new products on the line but it is just so expensive (upwards of 150+ dollars). Granted that is supposed to last for several months, I'm weary to pay that much when I can find an Oil of Olay version for cheaper, much cheaper. (2) Do you use a toner? I myself haven't used one consistently, but I noticed when I was abroad this summer that many of the European skin specialists I spoke with (at pharmacies or just in the skin sections of department stores) stressed the need for toner. I also noticed that much of the skin sections seemed to be filled with these sorts of liquids (a slight change from what I'm accustomed to in the states). (3) For my oiler areas (and yes, I do admit that around my period I get unnecessary acne, even as an adult), do I really still need moisturizer? I have been told time in and time out that the answer to this question is YES, but I sense that these moisturizers are only worsening the breakouts. Any suggestions there? and finally (4) What is your opinion regarding sunscreen/suntan lotions? How do you juggle that into your skin care regimen? Thank you so much for your time and answers. I know I should seek a dermatologist's help as a follow-up, but I'm curious to hear your thoughts regarding it all, since you have maintained such beautiful skin. (And like they always say, the proof is in the pudding…). :)
