Now About This Rain…

I don’t mind rain, really. I used to hate how it frizzed up my hair, but that hasn’t been a problem since I’ve become a Keratin convert. And more than anything, rain chills me out and makes me want to curl up on the couch with my husband, my dogs, and maybe some ANTM, which is nice. The only things about rain that make me crazy are 1) walking the dogs in it (Virgil turns into a mudball and Lucy takes one step out the door before letting me know in not-moving form that she’d really prefer to stay inside, thanks), and 2) the fact that I don’t own any even vaguely rain-appropriate (or, for that matter, snow-appropriate) footwear.

My feet, at present (I just got home from lunch), are extremely soggy and cold. Which sucks.

I’ve been thinking about getting a pair of Hunter Wellies, because I think we can all agree that they’re quite classic and neat-looking…but I don’t love how flats look with bulky winter coats, and I don’t want to have to forego height every single time it rains/snows/is generally crappy out for the next five months.

Anyway. I spotted these boots at the Dr. Martens store that just opened on Spring Street (it carries every single style imaginable and is pretty neat; if you live in the city you should check it out)…and they seem perfect. Waterproof, with just a bit of a heel, and excellent traction for slippery city streets.

I love them, and might need to buy them. What do you think? Any other rainboots out there that you particularly like?

Unfortunately, I don't have anything to share regarding rainboots. I prefer the classic flat wellie look. But, I can totally relate to your walking the dog situation. Our dog gets princessy in the cold rain, too. He just won't put his freaking bum down to go! He'll circle around and around and around, then he'll finally get in position… and jump right back up as soon as the wet ground touches his behind. This insane panicked look will be in his eye – “Holy crap guys! This ground is cold and wet!”

It's quite annoying…. but adorably so.

I don't mind flat boots as long as they are slim fitting. I had the problem of looking short and squat with rainboots that were too clunky for my twiggy legs. And I found Dav rainboots to fix that problem! Dav has a bunch of different styles, even rain flats (although, I don't know how affective that would actually be.)

Also, you should check out these darling Vivienne Westwood rain booties: http://www.anthropologie.com/anthro/catalog/productdetail.jsp?navAction=jump&id=18992891 they come in a few colors at different retailers. I think a short ankle rainboot can be a good alternative.

    Hey Jordan,

Tretorn and maybe even Hunter too makes rain boots with a wedge hell, that might solve your problem….

Today's rain made me realize that my own Keratin treatment, which I got back in June, has washed completely away. I need to make an appointment stat as I love love love the smoothness!

Last winter, I got a pair of waterproof winter boots with a wedge heel, which I loved because I got a ton of height, but still had complete grip and control on the icy-est of days. This year though I'm tempted to get a pair of green or red hunter wellies. And, ideally, a gorgeous British estate, a pack of hunting dogs, and regular tea times to go with them.

Using some J.Crew gift cards a few years ago to get a pair of Hunters was the best usage of gift cards ever–they have a little height, work well with yoga pants when I'm running around on weekends with bad weather, and every time I step in a puddle I'm all “F*** you, puddle!” because my feet are protected. They work well in both rain and snow with a pair of cozy socks, and will unabashedly wear them out with skirts and the like in the winter when I don't want to ruin my good shoes.

The Docs are cute, but personally I'd be wary running for the bus in them (knowing me, I'd fall and tear my pants open at the knee or similar), which is my main criterion for boots these days.

if you go to john sahag and mention RG i think they give you 10% off keratin! (or at least they used to; i'm going on the 11th and i'll check).

i saw the hunters-with-heels at the limelight market – adorable.

i saw the dav boots on your site a few weeks ago! it's the fleece lining that almost sold me. a cozy lining is key.

lucy does a full-on backwards lean, throwing her entire 6-pound body weight into it. it's extremely entertaining for passers-by; less so for me.

They protect my pants, look good with skirts, and are the best reason ever to buy crazy socks (like fun stiped or argyle socks). And they hold up despite salt (knock on wood, this is my third season). All I will say is that they are good boots. :)
