John Sahag Workshop Keratin Treatment

Good news for you, as the summer humidity kicks in:

I obviously can’t get Keratin at the moment (that’s a shot from a rainy – and ordinarily majorly frizz-inducing – day a couple of months after my first treatment, hence the remarkably smooth hair and alcoholic beverage)…but that doesn’t mean that you can’t!

Yesterday I stopped into John Sahag Workshop and confirmed with them that if you mention Ramshackle Glam you get 10% off of a Keratin treatment with Doug Macintosh (my Keratin-and-color guy; Karmela is my go-to for cuts, and Franny does a killer blow-out with flat iron curls). Plus, any RG readers who are new to the salon can get 10% off of any and all services through the month of August.

I’ve gone on and on (and on) about Keratin enough – read all about the process here, check out a video here, and read about how it affects your hair in different conditions here. In a nutshell: if you have summer frizz, prepare to not understand how your hair could possibly be so wonderful.

(And for those of you who are pregnant or otherwise uninterested in Keratin, consider a Moroccan Oil treatment to combat summer frizz. JSW offers them as an add-on to color and cuts – or you can buy the stuff and try it out at home.)

P.S. A couple of you have asked me if the process – I’ve had…I think four at this point* – changes your hair texture permanently, and the answer, for me, is yes, but only slightly. It’s been about eight months since my last treatment (they technically last up to six months), and my hair is a tiiiiiiny bit less frizzy and better-behaving than it used to be. It’s also a little more relaxed-beachy-wave than lioness-curl when I let it roam free, but it seems to be gradually reverting to its old (bad) behavior as time passes.

I just got my own Keratin treatment done again about a week ago–it seriously is the most amazing thing. I can’t get over how well it works. For the couple months before I got it (because the previous one had faded away) my hair was so impossible to work with and I’d wake every morning with insane tangled lunatic hair–even sleeping on a satin pillowcase. If anyone so much as sneezed near me, the hair would frizz up. To the point of actually making me depressed, but once I got the Keratin it was just perfect again. I love, love, love it.

I know that pregnancy is supposed to make hair grow thicker and longer; have you experienced this yet?

Are you not allowed to get keratin treatments due to pregnancy?  I did not know that…you may want to try keritase (sp)…it’s just a haircare product (not a chemical process)… and it keeps my hair super smooth…I get the one for fine hair (and use the overnight treatment)…you spray it on overnight and you wake up with super shiny hair…(it dries instantly btw)

I’m so glad you like it! It’s the best thing EVER.

I think my hair is a little thicker and stronger than usual thanks to the prenatal vitamins and hormones – a couple of people commented on it at the salon yesterday. So a trade-off, I guess…frizz, but lots of it ;)

I know this is so not the point. But your nails look beautiful. I prefer my nails short. I got some fake tips on them for my wedding last week because I figured I’d make them look extra special, but now I’m dying to pry them all off so I can have normal nails again like in the picture. Very pretty!

I’ve had one keratin treatment (the blowout – shorter-lasting version) — LOVED it, but am very concerned about the chemicals in my hair, potential long-term side effects, etc. Any info or research on the specific products that JSW uses? Desperate for another treatment but the concerns keep holding me back.

Well, here’s what I know (keeping in mind that I am no expert on this stuff): the version of the the treatment that the salon uses is not the Brazilian Blowout (which is the one under fire). They use something called Keratin Complex, but it’s my understanding that there are varying degrees of potential safety risks with any chemical treatment of this sort. It’s true that there’s a bit of a witch-hunt going on now with this stuff, but it’s also a fact that they’re new treatments and new information comes out all the time. So just exercise caution and use your best judgment, and if you’re concerned skip it (the LiQWD products and Moroccan oil are nice – albeit temporary – defrizzers).

Why thank you! I’m a fan of shorter nails as well.

Nope, they’re not advisable during pregnancy. I’ve heard of Kerastase but have never tried it – I’m using the LiQWD deep conditioner at the moment.

    Thanks for the additional info!

I started using it when my hair dresser used to give me keratin treatments…he would then give my keratase for upkeep after and I love it…if you have fine hair that tends to be frizzy with a flyways…it’s a good fit.

I know this is off topic, but where did you get the top that you’re wearing in the pic?  What’s the brand?  I LOVE it!  Thank You!

i think it’s bcbg, but it’s very old – it was a hand-me-down from my mom. but the Anna Dello Russo/I.N.C. collaboration (available at Macy’s) uses very similar colors and reminds me of this top. http://www.macys.com/campaign/social?campaign_id=169&channel_id=1&cm_mmc=VanityUrl-_-inc-_-n-_-n
