Quantcast

Whimsical / Lovely

This La Petit Voliere “shade pendant” is just too beautiful. Unfortunately it’s also just too expensive ($595 on Conranusa.com), but it’s pretty simple to DIY with a wire lampshade, a few branches (get them at a craft store), and a bunch of vintage bird ornaments (easy to find on eBay or in your local antique store).

See? Danny Seo created this for just $15 (!) using an old Ikea lampshade (he ripped the paper off), chicken wire from Lowe’s, and branches and birds from Michael’s.

this would only work in a really clean/true shabby chic home. In a small, cramped NY apartment (it's okay, we all have them too!) like yours, it would look just ramshackle and not glam.

I actually think it could work, but I think the birds would all have to be one color. Like all red birds on white chicken wire or all white birds on black. That might give it a more uniform feel. I personally am creeped out by birds so I wouldn't make it, but I could definitely see how it could be cool.

i was picturing the piece on a cozy, screened-in porch (sigh…one day…) or in a child's bedroom, but alejandra, i love your idea of simplifying the color scheme – i'd do pale, pastel-colored birds with silver/gold detailing on a white shade. much more subtle and clean-looking.
