Question For You: Rug!

OK, fine: enough of you said “rug!”…I’m going to look into a rug.

BUT.

Help?

I’ve been puttering around on Nuloom’s website, and can’t decide whether to go for color and pattern and just make the room crazy and amazing, or to tone things down a bit with a softer piece (you can see all the rug styles here). I’m open to pretty much any suggestion (other than jute or a totally solid piece; don’t want to go that simple), and would love to hear what you think.

As a reminder, here’s what the room looks like now (you can see more shots here), but two notes: 1) I’m planning to replace our brown couch – which is too small for the room and not particularly cozy – with a light grayish/brown one with deep pillows, and 2) I’m tired of decorating around my orange chair and am probably moving it elsewhere.

Thoughts?

Something with dark blues, whites, and yellows would be amazing!

When in doubt…go complimentary. In other words, hit up the color wheel.

I know you don’t want to go too simple, but straight up color won’t simplify it in a boring way, it will tie it all together. And can still make a statement. It’s not just pattern that knows how to party.

Here’s what I think as two options:
    1. Go complimentary with the hot orange chair. I would suggest an intense blueish teal rug. It’ll be ridiculously cool.

    2. Or, go complimentary with the yellow walls and find a purple rug.

Blue or purple rugs are not boring. And a future gray couch will love them too.

Complimentary colors (I always tell my art students) are best friend colors that sit across from one another at the lunch table. They’ll always look good together.

love the idea of deep blue – maybe a blue chevron could work both now and later.

I would definitely move the orange chair (the current yellow-orange color combo is rivaling McDonalds, which I don’t think is the look you’re going for). To compliment the yellow walls and your future grey couch, go with a purple rug (I’m thinking a rich eggplant shade). And I know you love the white sheers, but the room would pack more of a dramatic punch with heavier curtains or bamboo shades, which would also help anchor the space, fwiw.

yeah, i know. unfortunately there aren’t too many other places in the house for the thing to go…i think the dining room is actually the only available spot. and then i’ll swap in that white rocker for the time being.

I saw this on pinterest & thought of your room. No rug in here, but maybe some other ideas… http://www.christies.com/features/2009-november-introduction-to-chateau-gabriel-by-j-284-1.aspx
