DIY Sparkle Key Cap

Now, I happen to own an Angry Birds key cap.

Don’t be jealous. You can own one too.

But if you’re more sparkle than rage and happen to be in possession of some hard-to-tell-apart keys (or just want to add a little pizzazz to your keychain), this DIY project couldn’t be simpler. I wouldn’t even call it a “project.” It’s more like a “thing you can do.”

Anyway, all you need is some sparkly nail polish in the shade of your choice (I chose Deborah Lippmann Candy Shop) and top coat.

(Try black or silver sparkles with a silver key; red or gold sparkles with a gold key.)

Paint on two or three coats of the sparkly polish (use a piece of tape to delineate where you want the color to end if you don’t have a steady hand), and then apply the top coat and let dry.

That’s it.

Incidentally, this is a nice way to transform a key that you’d like to hang onto – say, the key from your first apartment, or the key to your college dorm room – into wearable art. Just hang it on a long metal chain or thin piece of leather and add a couple more charms (Anthro makes neat ones, like those pictured above, if you’re not already a collector) for a pretty (and pretty cool) necklace.
