Actual Living Room Before-And-After…Now With Furniture!

As promised, some shots of my freshly painted living room (that’s Valspar’s Warm Summer)…now with furniture! (Click here to see what the living room looked like in its original incarnation.)

The actual “After”…after the jump.

It’s pretty much all the same stuff you remember from our old apartment…but in a bigger room.

A room that permits us to have two side chairs plus a bouncy seat in it…as opposed to what we had before, which was two chairs downgraded to one when we had a baby, and then downgraded to none once that baby grew large enough to require things like floor space and room to turn around.

Anyway, I love it. One day, I’d like to swap out the dark brown couch for a dove gray one and lighten up the rest of the furniture, adding in some rustic pastels for a sort of Reese-Witherspoon-In-Ojai effect, but for now, it feels cozy, warm…like home.

The best part of the room: the fact that it has three windows. All that light!

Pictured: Salvation Army piano, HomeGoods plant, Crate & Barrel chair, side table, and lamp, Pier 1 sofa, Salvation Army coffee table, antique rocking chair from my grandma. And bouncy chair.

I love it! What a great room:) It seems like you are so happy in your new house and new town-so excited for you guys:)

That looks amazing – and so you! Your stuff works great with that awesome floor and the new wall color. And I LOVE the chair. But two questions: Just because, for me, a tile-patterned floor like that combined with that type of ceiling lamp automatically feels sort of…hallway-ish, are you planning on adding a rug in the seating area? I’m thinking a beige or warm-greyish one or maybe even a dusty dark green would look great. It could help pull things together and warm the space up even more. And are you planning on moving the lamp fixture to fit over the table and putting in a pendant lamp? They sometimes get in the way, true, but a simple modern one covered in a fabric in a dark color that matches the sofa, or in a burnt orange (or in some shade that would match an added rug) could look really good here, I think…

I agree with the first noter; I feel this definitely needs a large throw rug. Kind of a lot going on in this room and it all seems to be floating and not very grounded, but I think a rug would fix that up quickly and easily.

the floor is painted wood, not tile, so it’s not quiiiite as cold as it looks – but i would totally love a rug (greyish, yes!) and agree with you that it would pull together/warm up the space. alas, my dogs love rugs even more than i do (and do horrible things to them to show their affection). i do have the pendant lamp from our old apartment and am planning on installing either that or a ceiling light/fan fixture soon – probably a fan (which would mean that the pendant light would go in the dining area).

thank you, amber! we’re pretty psyched :)

  • Nate

Yeah, I noticed that it was actually painted wood. From the pictures it
looks a bit like it has a slightly-beaten-up, rustic feel to it, so I’m
sure the real-life effect is warmer than in the photos. And trust me, I grew up with a dog AND wall-to-wall carpets with rugs on top (oh yes),
so I feel you. ;) BUT! May I suggest a woven plastic rug? Yes, I know
they’re usually used on patios and the like, but there are some pretty
nice designs nowadays, and with your sort of, uh, mix-and-match,
ramshackle glam aesthetics, it could actually work…? (Oh, and a ceiling fan will totally look good in that room as well.)

Agree, the first thing I noticed was, “It needs a rug.” A plain beige one would make a huge difference. The checkerboard needs to be broken up.

  • jordanreid

Well, we’ll see. Maybe Ill look into those modular carpet tiles – they actually have pretty great patterns/colors and that way I could easily and inexpensively replace any “problem” areas ;)

  • Kate

This room has so much life and personality – I love it! And all that natural light!

I was not super crazy about the carpet tiles (maybe others could chime in). Mine got kind of gross and I never got around to tacking them together…what I would recommend is IKEA. You can get a nice rug to warm up the space and they are so inexpensive that you can change it up every season if you’d like.

I love the touch of orange.

At first when I saw that you had painted the blue walls yellow, I hated it. I always dream of having a blue room with black and white touches but now I see the yellow room fully furnished and I LOVE IT!!! The perfect colour choice.
Also you furniture looks completely new in this room. What a difference!

A new house! How exciting? Are you feeling OK about leaving the city? My question: did you paint the floor black/white checker board? Just curious b/c I’m moving into my first place in about a month, and I really want to redo the laminate floors in the (small-ish) kitchen so I’m trying to find inexpensive options.

  • jordanreid

nope, the previous owners did. it needs to be repainted but i’m putting it off because it’s such a pain (it’s a 2-step process; you need to tape off the white and paint that, let it dry, then tape off the black and paint that afterwards).

but i have a bunch of inexpensive floor rehab suggestions here: http://ramshackleglam.com/blog/home/ugly-floor-rehab/
