Reader Question / Rice Krispies Treats

Q. hey jordan!

how are you?  i wanted to know if you think i could put food coloring in rice krispie mix and if that would change that taste or anything about the recipe itself…let me know!  i might fool around with it this weekend.  thanks!

A. Nope, food coloring shouldn’t alter the taste at all. Just add it during the melting-the-marshmallows step (before pouring in the cereal) for best results!

For a fun Halloween twist on the original recipe, try adding a little orange food coloring, and then drizzling over some melted chocolate (put the chocolate in a Ziploc and slice off the corner to create a makeshift piping bag). Add some candy corn as shown, and enjoy day-of (Rice Krispies Treats don’t hold up particularly well for more than a day).

Tip: When pressing the mix into the pan, use a buttered spatula or wax paper so that it doesn’t stick to your hands.

I was watching this show on Food Network or Travel Channel about these sisters who opened a cupcake shop in DC and they mentioned that a lot of food coloring in icing will alter the taste- so just a tip to be careful and not add too much! They ended up using fresh berries to get a purple color- so if you find it has changed the flavor, you could play with orange rind to get a halloween color!
