Meet My Favorite Restaurant…

…definitely in Maine, very possibly in the world.

I’ve been going to Barnacle Billy’s every summer since I was about five (my very first boyfriend, Paul, was a waiter here), and as far as restaurants go, it’s pretty much everything I’m looking for. Cozy and warm inside (there’s even a fireplace for cooler days) and a rustic outdoor deck with a spectacular view of Perkins Cove…and amazing, amazing lobster rolls. Also, anywhere you can eat off a tray while wearing a bib is my kind of place.

Here we are waiting on the (sort of long) line to order dinner. This was also the site of our wedding weekend kick-off: on the Friday night before our Sunday wedding, we encouraged everyone who had already gotten into town to join us for dinner at Billy’s, and we all sat at long tables with our trays of lobster and plastic cups of chardonnay. It was the perfect start to the weekend.

Aaaand…here they are (crab roll on the left, lobster roll on the right), served alongside some of the best bread-and-butter pickles in the world. If seafood isn’t your thing, try my Mom’s order (she’s allergic to shellfish): the half chicken, some “native sweet corn,” and strawberry shortcake for dessert.

If you can’t make it to Ogunquit this summer, I highly recommend checking out Pearl Oyster Bar – it’s the best lobster roll you’ll get south of the (Maine) border.

Jordan seriously, stop talking about your wedding. It is incredibly boring and you are not exactly the first person ever to get married. Maybe you learn things from other people, instead of talking about yourself all the time.

The Fundamentals of Play, by Caitlin Macy, might be of interest. Settings coincide with your route this weekend: NYC, New Haven, Maine in the summer (first boyfriend included).

Honey, you need to talk to a professional about your hatred all over the Internet for anyone who's attractive and happily married. Don't hate what you so desperately want.

  • Xia

No, Lisa Marie, you're the one who is wrong. The only thing more pathetic that comment-hate is commentors who are clearly Jordan's (only!) friends who try to act like her attack dogs. Jordan's truly insane repetition of her depressing (Myspace!) wedding story makes her look nuts.

I am a newlywed and I disagree. I've never met Jordan in my life but I really like her blog. And if you don't like reading about people who are happily married and content, why don't you go read blogs written by bitter single women who cyber-terrorize someone who has what they want? I am sure there are plenty of blogs where you'll feel right at home. This isn't one of them, so why bother showing up?

thanks for the rec! i'll check it out.

who the hell else is she supposed to talk about, the random dude on the street? it's HER blog. she is telling us about life from her point of view, havent you figured that out already? whose perspective does she know better than her own? and, NO, i'm not an old chum of hers, just a sane reader.

I agree with Lisa Marie – I don't know Jordan at all and I'm not a newlywed (I'm not even in a relationship at the moment!) and I'm not understanding the vitriolic comments toward Jordan's (really rather offhand) mentions of her wedding and married life. Being married is a part of who she is, and her anecdotes that reference her wedding always relate to the subject matter of her posts. What's the issue?

Yum, lobster rolls. That one looks a bit excessively mayo-y, though (which I know is totally some people's ideal, though). I prefer mine with melted butter, salt and pepper – totally light on the mayo. Have you been to the Cape (um, Cod, that is, in MA)? The Popponesset has a great one, as does the new(ish) raw bar on the Ocean St. docks in Hyannis.

Oh goodness. Some of us are pregnant here, Jordan!! This is just too much. YUM!!

  • jordanreid

    Eek! Congratulations!!!
Also, question: are you allowed to eat shellfish when you're pregnant?

  • sarahfabulous

Not really sure! What's funny to me is when women give up sushi. All sushi in the US is flash frozen and therefore safe in moderation during pregnancy. I see one of the top doctors in SF and she insists sushi is not a problem provided you aren't going to the shadiest restaurant in the city. Still, so many women “give it up” during pregnancy.

I assume that shellfish is okay in moderation too. Problem is, a lot of American women don't do things in moderation. And lots of doctors just tell women no to everything because it's easier for them.
