Yesterday I Ate Lots Of Cookies

Like these! (YUM.)

We spent the day shooting two more baking segments in the studio kitchens in Connecticut before heading back to the rainy city. They went swimmingly, and of course I’ll post them here once they’re up!

Once again, Chauntelle worked wonders on my hair, making it look like I had about six times the amount that I actually do. Her volume-creating technique: she told me not to wash my hair in the morning (slightly dirty hair is easier to style), and then used a large-barrel curling iron on each section to give the ends a bit of flip. She then teased each section at the roots before wrapping it up in velcro rollers and letting me wander around for awhile (we had to travel from the hotel to the set). I got some weird looks from the businessmen in the lobby, but hey, what can you do?

After we arrived on set, she removed the rollers and gently brushed the top layers to smooth them out, and then pinned back one side, as pictured above. Last step: she used the handle of a rattail comb to tease up the crown just a touch more. I don’t know that I can recreate this kind of volume at home, but I loved it loved it, so I’m certainly going to try.

P.S. I’m not crying in that photo above – I had just put in eyedrops. In fact, I’ve been using eyedrops constantly (even waking up a few times each night to put them in) ever since my corneal abrasion, which is still – still! – bothering me. I have a doctor’s appointment in my future…but does anyone have any advice in the meantime? Early in the morning and towards the afternoon, when I get tired, my eye starts burning and puffing up underneath, and cold compresses and eyedrops only help temporarily. It’s both uncomfortable and not-so-cute-looking, and I’d really like it to go away. Have any of you experienced anything similar?

Monday / On Set

I spent yesterday in our Connecticut studio kitchen filming a series of baking segments (recipes/segments to come, of course). I usually handle my own wardrobe, because I’m picky about fit (aren’t we all?) and…well…I like what I like, and so I was pretty psyched to find tops for all five segments for under $100 ($85, to be exact) at Old Navy. Happy clients = happy me. My favorite of the bunch was that blue henley pictured above, which I couldn’t find online but is very similar to this one.

While poking about in the store on Black Friday (swell idea, I know), I found a few items that, while not quite right for these segments, would make excellent gift choices for just about anyone (well, anyone female):

Fair Isle Tie-Belt Wrap Cardigan ($35; an equally pretty but solid-colored style is here); Women’s Printed Flannel Lounge Pants ($12); Logo Pullover ($15; while I don’t usually like logo-ed stuff, the fit and weight of this pullover are just perfect).

One of the Thanksgiving Leftover Paninis I made during today’s BetterTV shoot. I am eating the spoils of the segment right this very moment.

Ramshackle Glam / GalTime

This morning, my kitchen was the site of a little Ramshackle Glam / GalTime collaboration (I’ll be contributing to GalTime on a regular basis starting shortly). Producer Kerri and cameraman Peter came by to shoot three segments, which included things like lavender and chocolate, and were thus extremely fun and up my alley.

Kerri, by the way, is also one of the women behind very fun style/beauty/entertainment blog Celebutante Sisters. Click HERE to check out their picks for Breast Cancer Awareness Month (love love love the Tory Burch rain boots).

Of course I’ll let you know when the GalTime segments air, but in the meantime, here’s a little preview:

I first saw these gorgeous things at a friend’s party last Christmas. I’ve been making them ever since…and they are amazing (very, very easy play-by-play to come).

Wednesday / Produce & Pillows

Wednesday began at the gorgeous, gorgeous Whole Foods up on 97th and Columbus. It was tough not to shop while we shot – the place was absolutely overflowing with rainbow heirlooms, bright-pink wild salmon, to-die-for parmigiana, and hundreds of other things that I wanted very much to eat. (The fact that there is no Whole Foods – or Trader Joe’s, for that matter – anywhere near our apartment is a source of constant frustration for me, because I am forced to either scour the produce department at our local Food Emporium looking for something vaguely fresh-looking, or pay twenty bucks for four tomatoes.)

Above, I’m wearing a Lafayette 360 jacket from Loehmann’s, an Eighty Sixty blouse, my new Vintage Revolution skinny jeans, and Steven by Steve Madden ankle boots (thank you, Felix!).

Get a similar look: Victoria’s Secret corduroy 2-button blazer ($78), Madison Marcus grey silk layer tank ($185), Vintage Revolution skinny jean legging ($118), Steve Madden Carlsen boots ($89.95).

Also: I fell completely in love with the lip gloss that Deb used on me, Smashbox Lip Enhancing Gloss in Electric ($18; raspberry-tinged pink with a non-tacky hint of glitter).

The final shot of the day took place in our apartment. Look at the wonders that a set designer can do to one’s bedroom – too gorgeous! A little tip I picked up: punch down the center of pillows into a “V” to make them look that much more polished.

Tuesday / Kickboxing & Manis & Joy, Oh My

OK, gotta say it: so far, the StriVectin shoot has been UNBELIEVABLY fun. I mean, I adore hosting more than pretty much anything in the world, so it’s not like much about this job is misery-inducing, but today involved things like manicures at Ajune Day Spa, kickboxing at New York Sports Club, and wandering down Park Avenue chatting with the very, very cool Anu, owner of Swirl Events (a company that organizes full-service, customized wine tasting events, and that I first heard about at the Newlywed Nest a few months ago).

I haven’t kickboxed in a few years…but I used to be pretty good at it (yes, really), and today’s shoot got me all nostalgic about the sport. I may just have to pick it up again one of these days; there’s just nothing like it for cardio + strength training + forgetting that you’re even exercising at all because you’re having so much damn fun.

To read more about NYC kickboxing, click here, here, or here, and click here to learn about the benefits of kickboxing (including stress reduction, serious calorie burning, and confidence boosting).

I also want to point out the pretty fantastic ankle-zip Joe’s Jeans (similar to these) that Felix of Say It With Style (you may remember him from this) put me in. Cute, no? He paired them with a Max Studio knit top (try something like this for a similar look), Steve Madden pumps (similar to these), and some gold hoops. It was a real change for me to wear something that body-conscious – I’m usually more of a loose-and-cozy kinda girl – but it was nice to switch things up a bit.

P.S. Kendrick wants to know what’s up with me and my Mini Legs. It’s the camera angle, OK? Also: shush.

Monday / Yoga-Ing & Tattoo Concealing

If I’m slightly more MIA this week than usual, please forgive: I’m running all over town shooting a series of segments for StriVectin (follow me on Twitter HERE).

I spent the greater part of Monday at YogaWorks, where Jeannine from BeautySweetSpot and I talked mind/body rejuvenation. Also, I managed to hold a plank position for pretty much forever while they got the shot just right. Yee! Also: ow.

The first order of business, however, was covering Ye Olde Tats. Sigh. I continue to love my tattoos, but sometimes I rue the day when 21-year-old me decided that it was a good idea to place an enormous, permanent design on my bicep.

After the tattoo-concealing process came to a close (thank you, Deb!), Jeannine and I made our way over to our mats for some candlelit Vinyasa.

I also picked up a little DIY candleholder tip: coffee cup lids are the perfect size for pillar candles, and protect your tables in a pinch if you’re, say, throwing a party and run out of decorative coasters.

Thanks to Dallas for taking these photos!

(After the jump, a few tips on tattoo cover-ups.)
