Office-to-Nursery Makeover

I can’t believe I’m showing you this room.

I HATE this room.

It’s the middle room in our railroad apartment, and up until a few months ago was a sort of catchall storage room/office. It’s narrow, and pretty dark, and I tried all sorts of different things in it (including couches that never got sat on and shelving units that quickly became junk-depositories) before finally giving up on it and just letting Kendrick fill it with musical instruments and more or less shutting my eyes and covering my ears and singing “LALALA!” every time I passed through.

But!

Narrow and dark though it may be, it technically counts as a second bedroom, and in Manhattan (and especially for the rent we’re paying), that is an extraordinary thing to have. So the moment we found out we were expecting, I immediately started making plans to transform this headache-inducing space into the nursery of my dreams.

I shot a segment on the redo with AOL and had been waiting for it to air, but I’ve been dying to show you pictures and finally got the go-ahead to do just that, so: here we go.

Up there, that’s the before.

Want to see the after?!?!?!?

!!!!

I can’t tell you how much I love this room now, or how much it makes me feel centered and prepared for all the changes that are about to take place. I know, it’s just furniture…but the process of pulling together such a peaceful, beautiful space gave me confidence, and somehow made all this feel so much more real.

Here’s the inspiration board that my producer and I threw together before we got started.

I highly recommend doing this in advance of any major room overhaul – it can be as simple as paint swatches and a couple of pictures pulled from magazines (or you can do what we did and paste together images of the actual products we were thinking of using), and will do wonders in terms of giving you a sense of the overall look and feel of the space. For example, you may think that you want a bright rug…but then once you see the color juxtaposed against the chair you’ve chosen, it may just not work. And that’s a good thing to know before hauling large pieces of furniture up four flights of stairs. Just sayin’.

What we did:

- Added a rug for warmth and coziness, plus a dramatic light fixture to draw focus toward the center of the room.

- Replaced our rickety old CraigsList desk with a spiffy new corner desk and hung the instruments around it in order to streamline the work area and make it more efficient.

- Used wall decals (I love the one we chose from Wee Gallery) as an inexpensive way to add color to the room, and added a graphic black-and-white mobile as a modern alternative to more traditional styles.

- Rounded out the decor with some extra-personal touches, like an antique headboard we picked up on our honeymoon in Bali and a couple of paintings we did ourselves (not shown; we added those later).

- Made everything as functional as possible – storage under the crib, extra storage under the desk, shadowboxes that double as shelves (and have mirrored backs as a bonus, to make the room look bigger).

- Chose a warm honey wood color for the crib and changing table to keep things light.

- Created three distinct areas (Sleeping Area; Sitting Area; Working Area) to break up the room and make it seem larger.

- Focused on creating balance in the decor: we wanted the overall look to be bright and cheerful, but since the room is in the center of our apartment (we live in a railroad) we didn’t want to go too far in the “baby” direction – hence the pale greens, greys, and whites in semi-sophisticated patterns rather than, you know, rainbow-patterned sheeps and such.

It looks so so lovely!  I had such a blast putting together Emilio’s nursery too, and I agree, getting it done had a very calming and soothing effect- something about being able to be in control of something in this crazy life changing process!  I found some cheap adorable safari themed wall decals at TJ Maxx one day and I swear putting those up helped bring the whole room together.  I love being in his nursery now, even in the middle of the night half asleep- it will definitely be a soothing and happy space which means baby will sleep well there!  :)

I think it’s an adorable room but to be honest, the only thing that puts a bad taste in my mouth is the fact that there is a computer in the nursery.

    Great job!  :)

It looks great!  Very you.  :-)  But oy, I don’t know how you New Yorkers can live in such tight quarters.  I’d be claustrophobic!

It’s very cute but I can’t help but to have a bad taste in my mouth over the fact that most of the items were provided free in exchange for coverage on your blog and on AOL. It just seems a little tacky, like you’re pimping out your baby’s personal space for free furniture. Would you have bought the same things or went with the same design choices if you had to pay full retail price for the items? How did the free items influence your design and your choices?

Things like this are why I only follow design blogs like Young House Love. They never accept freebies so you know their design choices and budget are coming from an authentic and organic place, and not influenced by what manufacturers are giving them.

the room looks great! i love that it’s not so ‘baby-ish.’  it fits right in with the rest of your home.

where did you end up putting all the stuff that used to be in the room?

ps- closing on the house next thurs : D

i hear ya. i’m usually paid for hosting work, but wasn’t for this segment, so AOL offered to coordinate with a couple of companies that were interested in coverage to compensate me for my time, and together my producer and i chose all of the pieces ourselves – i was very, very grateful for the help. RG coverage and product mentions weren’t mandated, but i wanted to show you guys the result anyway, and of course i always make sure to disclose comprehensively.

ha! believe it or not, it’s pretty big for an NYC apartment (a Young Person one, anyway).

    thank you thank you!

the stuff that used to be in the room is sort of dispersed throughout the apt – i bought a few cabinets for the kitchen area that have decent storage space, so that helped. and i ended up moving the old desk into the kitchen, so now i have my very own work space (as opposed to the dining room table), which is nice!

CONGRATS on your house – that’s so exciting!

alas, with limited apartment space there’s not much that can be done about that. and we can play itunes lullabies this way :)

i’m so glad you like it! one of the most fun things, honestly, was picking out books to put on the shelves…i can’t WAIT for late-night reading sessions. the safari decals sound adorable – i’ve never seen anything like that at TJ Maxx!

Neither had I, and I found them in the bath and body section! Random luck!

I love those bookends!! Can you tell me who makes them? They are fantastic!

what a sweet room!  good job!

i love that guitar/computer corner and the desk in it.  i love that there’s a computer in the baby’s room–i would imagine it might allow some minor multitasking for both parents, when baby needs company.

how could people say any of it leaves “a bad taste in their mouth”?  it’s great!

aren’t they awesome?! and they were like $3 each (LOVE homegoods). unfortunately it doesn’t say the manufacturer on them, but these are pretty cool: http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_SPM5180764401P?sid=IDx20070921x00003a&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=SPM5180764401

that was what i figured – kendrick can be on his computer while i nurse the baby (or whatever) — the more seating/activity areas in the same room, all the better for family togetherness.

also, probably good to have google extremely close at hand during diaper changes, right? ;)

Complimentary stuff in exchange for promotion is done all over the business world.  Do you think celebrities would wear half the stuff they do on the red carpet if it wasn’t free?  The room looks great and it’s all from very accessible brands. I love how they hung the guitars on the wall, gives me an idea for our music/office room.

I see that Daddy gets to keep his guitars.  You did a wonderful job.  I imagine setting up a room for a baby must be one of the most exciting things to experience.

Ahhh Alex – do you realize how big Jordan’s apartment is in comparison to a lot of New Yorkers with children?! Children often sleep in the lounge room, or all in a studio so they are in the kitchen too or in the same bedroom as the parents for a long time. The computer is a zero concern!

You’ve used the space so well Jordan – great job!

If anything, that’s the good thing about blogging and sharing- you get to see how other people live. I’ve lived in Upstate NY my whole life so it was a shock to me to see a computer in a baby’s room. I’m a fan of Jordan’s blog and I’m sorry if what I said was offensive.

oh, no offense taken whatsoever! i too aspire to one day live in a house with separate rooms for large electronic equipment and newborns ;)

Ohh Alex I just re-read it and I came across as very matter of fact! Sorry from me! LOL :) I loveeee Upstate NY – dream of moving there (all of my awesome in-laws are there) but we love our jobs here in the city. Seriously considering Wappingers Falls with a killer commute though so we are at least halfway. :)

Also – I should have added – I know of a few people whose ‘nursery’ is the spare closet. Seriously! LOL It is kinda crazy. Lucky you with all that space!! :)
