Oscars 2013: Best Head-To-Toe

When it comes to red-carpet fashion the dress is the biggie, of course…but it’s the head-to-toe styling that really makes an impact.

Example: Zoe Saldana. I didn’t really love her Alexis Mabille dress (although I appreciate how original it is)…but that is some gorgeous hair and makeup.

Here’s another example of top-to-bottom drop-dead styling: Charlize Theron in Dior. Her makeup and hair are simple, understated…and totally perfect (I love how those visible roots add edge to her pixie cut).

But those aren’t my favorite head-to-toes. These are:

I love how Jessica Chastain and Naomi Watts (both in Armani) went for sexy, slinky, screen-siren gowns rather than poufs, but each gave a unique twist to the look: Jessica with smooth, retro waves and red lips, and Naomi with a slightly punky updo and fresh makeup. Hair-wise, Naomi Watts was my #1 of the night: I love how her styling team gave her major volume but still managed to keep her looking understated rather than windswept (ahem, Kristin Stewart).

Tip: An easy way to add volume to an updo without teasing is to lift up the top section of your hair and spritz hairspray (try Dove Style+Care Strength & Shine Flexible Hold Hairspray*) on the roots. Hold the hair in place for a few seconds to let the hairspray dry, then continue styling. (Click here for a step-by-step.)

But really: for me, Jennifer Lawrence just wins the whole thing. Why? Watch this post-Oscar-acceptance backstage video.
