Back To Basics

I’ve had it with my skin. Had it!

You’ve heard me moaning about my oft-troublesome skin from time to time: the post-pregnancy period, what with the tidal waves of crazy hormones and all, has been less-than-kind to my face, and now with the weather turning…

I’ve had it.

I’ve tried lots of products and potions over the years, with varying results: some work, some don’t, some work temporarily but then sort of peter out…and I’d like to find a comprehensive (and affordable) routine that works for the long-term. So I’m taking it all back to basics, and going for facial skincare products that are specifically designed for sensitive skin, free of dyes, chemicals, irritants, and anything else with the potential to send my pores into a tizzy.

For the remainder of 2012, I’m partnering up with Simple Skincare to bring you tips, tricks, giveaways, and information on how to bring out the absolute best in your skin (and with 58% of women classifying their skin as “sensitive”, I’m assuming there are a lot of you out there who feel as I do). Simple is new to the U.S. market (I remember using their products during my brief time living in London), and they’ve launched 13 core products specifically for sensitive skin.

Simple also teamed up with goal keeper of the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team, Hope Solo, to share her advice on managing sensitive skin through balanced lifestyle choices. Learn more – and enter for a chance to win an all-inclusive trip to Los Angeles – at www.EscapeWithHope.com.

P.S. The top photo is of the Simple Cleansing Facial Wipes  packed into my travel kit – I took them with me to Canada so as to avoid the whole traveling-with-liquids thing, and loved them, especially that they’re oil & alcohol free.

P.P.S. Do you have sensitive skin? Tell me your troubles in the comments! I’ll do my best to address any specific issues or questions you have in upcoming posts.

Hey Jordan, My skin has been troublesome for me for YEARS also! Two things I have found lately which have helped A TON are using tea tree oil on my skin daily, along with Vit. E cream, as well as…giving up gluten. There does seem to be a huge relationship between gluten and the skin! Google it, it’s fascinating. I’m always up for learning more about healthy ways to take care of my skin! Thanks :)

really?! that’s interesting – i didn’t know that gluten affected people who weren’t straight-up gluten intolerant. googling :)

Ugh. I totally have sensitive skin. The one thing that has really helped me is saying goodbye to tap water. I now wash my face with thermal water (and spray some on immidiately post shower.) It seems SO princess-y to say “I only was my face with special bottled water – but it changed my skin almost right away.

  • jordanreid

really?! that does sound fancy :) but if it works for you, that’s awesome.

I saw the Simple products at Target and was wondering about them – especially the facial wipes because I have yet to find ones that don’t make me break out! I have sensitive combination skin and have yet to find the perfect skincare routine, so I can’t wait to read more.

i have used the simple wipes featured in this post and i liked them, but i have to say, i was really disappointed with simple’s eye makeup remover…interested to hear your reviews of their other products since i am 50/50 on the brand right now

Echoing that gluten comment as well!

Also, I find the invisible zinc skincare range really good for sensitive skin, the face wash is amazing… but when I looked at the website, it doesn’t seem to be available in the USA… :(

Three words: Acne at 30. I never thought I’d be battling acne like a teenager at this age. I’ve spent the last 2 years trying out different options and still haven’t found one I’m happy with. I’m excited for this series!

  • jordanreid

that’s interesting that you bring up the eye makeup remover – that’s been one of my favorite discoveries since i’ve started playing with the line. i really, really like it – it feels super-gentle and yet manages to easily remove this crazy new liquid liner i have that stays on through things like being tumbled around in the ocean. that said, i haven’t tried to use it to remove big-night-out makeup, so i’ll let you know how that goes.

  • jordanreid

what is UP with the acne at 30?!?! i hear you. it is ridiculous.

  • jordanreid

no, it is – it came to the US just a few months ago. i know that the line is in target, and you can also buy the products from places like drugstore.com, cvs.com, and amazon.

I can tell you, from self-experimentation that my skin reacts to the gluten, and not in good ways. However, when I do stay off the gluten, my skin is MUCH less inflamed. Check out the Clear Skin Diet book–it’s a great read, and not trying to sell you anything! Ha.

I’ve found that drying my skin after cleansing with a paper towel/absorbent napkin rather than a regular ol’ towel has helped my skin enormously. It is totally not eco-friendly, but I’d honestly rather use a couple paper towels than stuff my body with anti-acne meds and chemicals. I also fell head over heels in love with bioderma sensible h20. It is absolutely incredible!

I’ve definitely been looking forward to trying the Simple line of products. I’ve always had sensitive skin and get random red rashes every so often when I try new products or even change up anything in my routine.  Hopefully the Simple products won’t do this because it’s very hard for me to find products that are gentle enough for my skin.

  • Valerie

maybe i got a bad batch…i use it on cotton balls and have to press really hard for it to even begin to remove my mascara and eyeliner (which isn’t waterproof and i’ve never had trouble with other removers)…it is very gentle, but haven’t found it to be effective. hmm….

Funny you should post about these… I got the cleanser and the exfoliating wipes by them about a month ago and have never broken out so badly :( so now I’m on to Cindy Crawfords line which im loving! Glad these wipes work for you though, wish they worked for me, they’re soo convenient!

  • jordanreid

Cindy Crawford has a skincare line?! That woman is a powerhouse.

I’m gluten intolerant, possibly allergic but not celiac and it has help make my skin more sensitive and I get lovely spots of psoriasis and rash blisters on my face.  I switched to Simple when I wasn’t sure what was causing the rash because I wanted something basic, etc – and I’m moving to England this fall for grad school so I wanted a line that I could easily get over there on a grad student’s very limited budget.  My skin is behaving again (despite my odd sleep patterns working 3rd shift!)

I purchased this product for my son who is severely handicapped and allergic to alcohol because the product is advertized as frangrance and oil and alcohol free wipes.  When you look at the lable that is what it says.  But look closely on the back where the ingredent listing is and you will see that this product has two types of alcohol in it.  This product could have seriously injuried my son or even cause his death.  He is highly allergic to alcohol and all derivatives.  I contact the company and that was almost 1 yr now and they have not reimbursed me or sent me other stuff from Unilver stated that they would which I would not have used anyway to them lying about ingrediences in thier product.  Im not stating it is not a good product cause I do not use it or will ever but what I am stating is they were not will to do a recall and pull thier product off the shelves and change the lable to state it has alcohol in it.  It is listed under an uncommon name which if you research will find that it is alcohol deriviatives.  I dont think that some lable should be more important then someones life.   BUYER BEWARE and CHECK ALL INGREDENTS BEFORE USING…..
