Best Diaper Bags

Q. Hi Jordan,

I know you’ve done a post on fabulous diaper bags before…and I loved them. Problem? [Some of them] are no longer available. Do you have suggestions for some other lovely diaper bags? I don’t want anything that looks too diaper bag-ish or childish.

Cheers,

Charla

A. Absolutely!

Above is the diaper bag that I own (albeit in a different color): when I was pregnant I got all obsessed with the idea of a gorgeous diaper bag and decided to splurge on a navy, quilted Marc Jacobs Eliza that was classic enough to go with anything, and that I knew I’d never get sick of.

The Eliza comes in a ton of different colors that change each season; it’s certainly expensive ($298, although I got mine on sale for about $175 because it was from an earlier season), but it’s something that you theoretically use every day for years, so to me it was worth a bit of an investment. (And just FYI, this bag totally works for non-moms too…I get stopped on the street all the time by stroller-free women wanting to know where I got it.)

Above are some of my favorite styles in a range of prices – I’d especially encourage you to check out timi & leslie, which carries very stylish, grown-up-looking bags in the $150-$170 range.

If you’re looking for something summery that you can bring along to the park/beach, here are two season-specific styles that I love.

I also want to give this rucksack from Petunia Pickle Bottom special mention, because it is seriously cool, and perfect for the Mom who’s more into jeans and leather jackets than pink and blue polka-dots.

And if you’re looking for something really unique, Etsy has lots of pretty diaper bag options (just be careful if you want something with lots of pockets, as lots of the styles sold as “diaper bags” are really more “totes”).

One thing to note: You might want to pick up an everyday purse that’s big enough to hold the basics in addition to your diaper bag, if you don’t already have one. Because honestly, when I’m running out the door for a couple of quick errands my diaper bag feels too unwieldy, so I just stick a toy, a bottle, a diaper, a burpy bib and a changing pad in my regular tote or crossbody and call it a day. (Also, diaper bags are wonderful for many things, but one of the many things they are wonderful for is hiding my keys/wallet/lipstick deep in their depths, never to be seen again, so I reserve them for baby stuff.)
