New Year’s Breakfast Ideas (a.k.a Hangover Helpers)

What I’ve got on tap for this evening’s dinner, to be eaten while watching the Watching Dead marathon (whee; thank you, AMC): Slow-Cooked BBQ Pork.

And I’m just saying: even if you’ve got big plans for tonight, a boneless pork tenderloin and some soda would be a really smart thing to stick in your slow-cooker before heading out for the evening. It takes about thirty seconds, and when you get home all hungry and champagne-soaked you’ll thank me, because it makes for even more delicious late-night fare than McDonald’s (and that’s saying something, because McDonald’s is delicious).

And besides, even if you don’t get around to eating it tonight…

Oh my god, is it ever good first thing in the morning all hashed up with potatoes, eggs and avocado.

Avocado & Eggs

Oeufs en Cocotte

California Scramble

Pumpkin-Banana-Nutella Pancakes

Now get thee to the grocery store…and quickly, because I was just there, and talk about your zombie apocalypses. Apparently a national holiday creates a day-before panic for things like Beefaroni, pickles, and Windex.

2012 Recap: Life Experiences and General Drama

I think it’s fair to say that 2012 brought a lot of introspecting around these parts.

2012 Recap: Home & DIY

This is probably the category that I had the most fun with this year, for pretty obvious reasons.

I mean, we moved.

Transitioning from a fourth-floor walkup that we pretended was a two-bedroom but was actually a one-bedroom with a hallway that was slightly wider in one spot (and that had a toilet in the kitchen and a bathtub where the closet should have been; how weird is that?) to a for-real home was right up there with marrying Kendrick and having Indy in the most exciting moments of my life.

And while the end result was more than worth the drama, saying that it was not an easy process is an understatement.

Also, holy god, is home ownership ever a pain in the butt. A worth-it pain in the butt, but still very much a pain in the butt.

I mean, people told me it would be a pretty major challenge…but it continues to throw fun little surprises my way. Like falling trees. And de-icing my front steps, which was a thing that just magically happened when we lived in an apartment building with a super, and yet this morning somehow resulted in two boots full of environmentally-friendly-yet-very-uncomfortable-on-one’s-toes salt. (How did I manage to pour salt into my boots instead of on the ground? Can’t tell you.)

And then the other day the heat stopped working, and so I called my contractor (who is my new best friend because he’s extremely nice and fields the occasional call from me asking things like “Why did my heat just stop working?”), and it turns out that oil tanks don’t magically refill themselves. And that they cost somewhere in the realm of a grand to deal with. Hello!

Of course, an enormous part of my life this year was spent writing and shooting two seasons of Jordan In The House, which was absolutely the most exciting thing ever. And exhausting. And an opportunity that I’m endlessly grateful for, because it resulted in some crazy experiences, a wonderful friendship with my videographer, John, and a visual diary of the overwhelming and awesome experience of purchasing and decorating a first home.

2012 Recap: Personal Style

Well, that was a year.

Not “a year”…a year. I mean, lots happened.

Style-wise I went from city girl to suburban mama, and my look chilled out accordingly (but still managed not to change all that much, because I’ve been a creature of slouchy habit since approximately 1981).

I used to occasionally wear skirts and dresses and, you know…clothing that people wear in public; now I reach for jeans and sweaters that could arguably double as pajamas. Or might actually be pajamas. You never know.

I used to be wedded to my heels; these days, I’m more likely to pull on a pair of snow boots.

I used to carry adorable little purses; I totally still do, thanks the presence of an actual, for-real station wagon (!) in my life that handily totes all my diapers and wipes and changes of clothing and little blinky toy things for me.

Here’s what happened on the RG style frontier in 2012…

{ Took it easy… }

{ Brightened up with Swarovski… }

{ Said good-bye to our old apartment with a Spring Preview shot for The Limited… }

Got freezy in Hell’s Kitchen… }

{ Underwent the aforementioned style makeunder… }

{ Let out my inner Tyra for Buffalo Jeans (click through the link to see what I mean)… }

{ Hit the road in snakeskin heels… }

{ Had a deep thought or two about fashion blogging and fancy-pants pictures… }

{ Went retro in possibly my favorite look ever for a rockabilly-themed JITH segment… }

{ Tried on crazy/amazing furry things for a Jones New York campaign… }

{ Hung out with InStyle Magazine and was so excited about it that I turned fifty shades of purple… }

{ Styled UGG Australia’s Fall 2012 campaign… }

{ Tried on millions of watches (and hostess gowns) as Timex’s Brand Ambassador… }

{ Channeled my inner leather-jackets-and-combat-boots girl while shooting a campaign with Old Navy… }

{ Covered Fashion Week for New York Magazine and Piperlime (while striking dramatic poses on my porch, of course)… }

{ Acted like a goofball for a red carpet moment while hosting an event during Fashion’s Night Out… }

{ Corralled my favorite mini-model (that would be Lucy) into posing with me for a series of fall looks for New York Magazine and Sorel… }

{ Went simple all weekend long for a series with TJ Maxx… }

{ Got witchy… }

{ Went more than a little Grey Gardens, and was totally OK about that… }

{ Wore fancy couture that I could never possibly afford in real life for an appearance on Better with Dove… }

{ Rhapsodized about hats (and rings, and earrings, and sweaters) with Joyus… }

{ Cozied up for the holidays… }

{ And had a personal Dreams Do Come True moment on a shoot for Cosmo. }

Best-Ever Oreo Truffles

OK, for some reason the original Oreo Truffle recipe that I put up years and years ago (inspired by Kendrick’s aunt’s recipe) has disappeared from RG, and has been replaced with a seemingly permanent link to a random post about plaid shirts from Christmas 2011. Go figure.

Anyway, I thought I’d take advantage of the fact that I’m making a batch to bring with me to visit friends tomorrow to get up the recipe again (and with better shots this time).

If you’ve never made these, you have to. People freak out.

1. Crush a 16-oz package of Oreo cookies (a food processor is probably ideal here, but I don’t have one…so I use the very effective method of putting them all in a big Ziploc bag and whacking them repeatedly with a rolling pin).

2. In a large bowl, mush together the crushed Oreos with an 8-oz package of cream cheese (full fat, please; these are truffles we’re talking about).

3. Roll the mixture into 1″ balls and set aside for the moment.

4. Melt about half a package of semi-sweet chocolate chips in the microwave (this works best if you microwave the chips in 30-second increments, mixing in between).

5. Using two forks (I used my fingers for the photo because two forks require two hands, and I would have needed a third to take a photo, but two forks is neater) gently roll each ball in the melted chocolate, and set on a wax paper-lined cookie sheet.

6. Add the toppings of your choice (I went with chopped walnuts, coconut and red sugar). You can either roll the balls in the toppings to cover them completely, or just sprinkle a little on top.

7. Let the truffles set in the refrigerator (about twenty minutes should do it).

Store covered in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Objects Of Affection

A gold First Knuckle Ring (a gift from Kendrick; these are also called “memory rings” because you move them from your pinkie to above the knuckle of any finger to remind you that you have to do something)…

A blue vintage Princess phone found on eBay (similar)…

Chocolate-covered Oreos and what’s left of my marzipan from Li-Lac Chocolates, in Grand Central…

Two favorite new products: Fresh Sugar Tinted Lip Treatment in Passion (a sheer blackberry shade that moisturizes and provides SPF) and Dr. Jart+ Pore Purifying Mask (which makes you look like Hannibal Lecter for the duration of application, but is great for tightening pores if you find yourself in the midst of a breakout)…

And a pony sleep shirt.
