How-To: Sequins In The Sun

The above image is from the Curve Boutique / Make Up For Ever event I attended at SoHo House last week.

That’s the roof deck at SoHo House. Very glamorous. (Ooh, speaking of: want to know how to make a truly spectacular summer drink inspired by one I found at SoHo House years ago? Click here.)

Anyway, the Style Clinic got me all atwitter about things like white lace dresses and neon makeup (another one is coming up at the SoHo House Miami on June 7, for those of you in the area)…but while the above image (courtesy of Curve Boutique) is very pretty, it’s not exactly how I’d recommend doing the whole daytime sequins thing.

Mostly because I destroy my cocktail dresses by smashing them into overstuffed closets rather than bouncing about in the surf while wearing them. It’s a personal preference.

How-To: Sequins in the Sun

- Keep the overall palette subdued. This is not to say that you can’t include things like leopard. Did you know that animal prints have now officially reached “neutral” status? ‘Tis true.

- No spike heels. Flats, maybe wedges…but nothing that says “I am still wearing the clothes that I wore last night.”

- Makeup (and nailpolish) should be completely casual: keep it minimal and light, with maybe a swipe of liquid liner (all about brown these days) for definition.

- Likewise, keep the accessories to a minimum: your sequined piece is all the glitter you need.

Summer Scents For The Home (Plus DIY)

To celebrate summer, I would really like my home to smell like a salad.

I’m serious.

All about the fresh foodie scents lately.

Above, the best of the best (L to R): Archipelago Heirloom Vine candle, J.R. Watkins Orange Citrus room spray, Williams-Sonoma English Cucumber candle.

I also wouldn’t mind terribly if my home smelled like turquoise water and fresh coconut: I’ve already written about NEST’s Beach Soap Set, but how beautiful is that porcelain sea urchin-inspired reed diffuser?

And of course, you can always whip up a customized home scent of your very own.

DIY ROOM SPRAY

1. Sterilize a 24oz bottle (with a cap) with boiling water; let dry.

2. In the bottle, mix together about a teaspoon of essential oil (try lemongrass or orange for a light, summery scent) and 2oz of perfumer’s alcohol or high-proof vodka.

3. Fill the bottle with distilled water, put on the cap, and shake to emulsify. The water will separate over time, so shake before each use.

DIY REED DIFFUSER

You can also pour the essential oil directly into an old reed diffuser bottle (I save all of mine; they’re so pretty and come in handy for lots of stuff), pick up some bamboo skewers at the grocery store, and make your own reed diffuser at a fraction of the price of a store-bought one.

Add some twine to the neck if you like; that’s always pretty.

Perfect Hostess Gift: Nest Beach Soap Set

Ooh, so pretty.

And the perfect thing to bring along with you if you’re visiting friends or relatives this summer (I brought one for Francesca’s mother when we went to their place for Memorial Day): it’s portable, chic, and goes with pretty much any decor style (that sea urchin-inspired dish is much more substantial than you’d imagine, and the soap smells like…well, the beach. Which is lovely).

When to bring a hostess gift? A bottle of wine is just fine if you’re heading over to someone’s place for a single meal, but if you’re staying beyond that it’s always nice to bring a small something (and if you’re staying for the weekend, definitely go for a gift).

Summer Side Dish Hall Of Fame: Mexico City Street Corn

I was first introduced to this stuff a few summers ago by Francesca, who dragged me down to Cafe Habana and ordered me to eat one, despite my insistence that a) I don’t love eating corn in public (the whole stuck-in-teeth thing) and b) spicy food makes me angry.

But it is so good. And easy to make at home. And impressive to guests. And if you do it yourself it is even more wonderful, because you can eat it in vast, indelicate quantities, and your floss is just a few feet away.

MEXICO CITY STREET CORN

What you need:

1 ear of corn per person

Butter

Mayo

Crumbled cotija cheese (a mild cheese that you can find in most well-stocked supermarkets)

Chili powder or cayenne pepper

What you do:

1. Grill (or boil) shucked corn until tender.

2. Roll ears in melted butter, and then spread with a little mayo.

3. Sprinkle with cheese, and then a touch of chili powder or paprika.

4. Serve with a wedge of lime.

Exciting Announcement: Dove Hair Brand Ambassadorship

So I have some news that I’ve been waiting to share with you for awhile now, but no longer! I am over-the-moon excited to tell you that for the next year, I’m going to be joining the Dove Hair team as their Brand Ambassador.

I mean…Dove. Dove! Beyond the fact that their products have been a staple for me and my family for as long as I can remember, I’ve been struck for years (decades?) now by the company’s approach to real beauty and their commitment to building self-esteem in women of all ages. I remember seeing those ads featuring a lineup of real women years ago (I think it was right around the time I graduated from college) and thinking to myself how beautiful they were, and how cool it would be to appear in one. So to have the opportunity to work this closely with a company that I have such admiration for – it’s a dream come true.

So what does this brand ambassadorship mean? All sorts of awesome stuff: I’ll be testing out products and styles for you, providing my very best hair tricks and tips in posts and videos, working as a “real world” counterpoint to celebrity stylist Mark Townsend, and attending Dove events to provide on-the-go coverage (I’ve got one coming up in the Hamptons that I’m pretty psyched about), among other things.

Another exciting thing about being the Dove Hair Brand Ambassador is that I now have access to all sorts of fantastic Dove products…which means that you now have access to all sorts of fantastic Dove products. So to kick off the program, I’d like to give fifty readers (yes, fifty) the opportunity to try out two products that I’m completely obsessed with at the moment: the Nourishing Oil Care Detangler (I use this every single time I brush out my wet hair, and think it’s an absolute beach bag essential) and the Style+Care Frizz-Free Shine Cream-Serum, which is a lightweight frizz-fighter that you smooth onto your ends to break them up a bit and give them some lovely, healthy shine.

To win your very own full-sized version of both products, just comment below – anything goes, really, but I’d love to hear your very first Dove memory (everyone has one, right?). I’ll pick 50 winners at random one week from today. (Contest open to U.S. readers only.)

Thank you so much to DailyGlow.com for this morning’s awesome interview and coverage of the partnership!

Dove is a sponsor of Ramshackle Glam.
