Baby

Totally Fine

I titled this post “Totally Fine” because I think that’s how you should kick off any post that includes a photo of yourself (or anyone, really) in a hospital bed, in which the outcome was…totally fine. I am totally fine, and the baby is totally fine. And I knew that both of us were totally fine when this picture was taken (it takes a little while to get discharged from hospitals at two in the morning, and we got antsy and started making videos), hence the smile.

So what happened last night was that I was all excited to see Kendrick for the first time in nearly a week (since he was at work already when I got back from Canada yesterday morning), and decided to make something nice for dinner. But then I started feeling sort of weird while wandering around the supermarket, and called him to help me come carry stuff, and so what was going to be a romantic reunion was actually me thrusting a bunch of bags in his face and sort of keening and huffing and puffing all the way home. When we got upstairs I did what you’re supposed to do if you’re having Braxton-Hicks contractions (start walking if you’re laying down, or lay down if you’ve been walking, and drink lots of water) while Kendrick cooked dinner, but they didn’t go away, and so around 10:30PM my doctor told me to head to the hospital.

And, because this is just how things like this go, once I laid down in the bed and got all hooked up to various instruments, I was 100% better. Arrrrrrr. I mean: obviously that’s a good thing, but still. I felt like That Overreacting Girl. So I laid there for an hour or so being monitored, got unhooked…and instantly had a contraction. I sent Kendrick flying off towards the nurse’s station to announce to the nurses (who all knew that I had been admitted with Braxton-Hicks contractions) that HIS WIFE HAS HAD A CONTRACTION (…to prove that I hadn’t been…lying?), and he returned with the least concerned-looking woman I have ever seen in my life. She told me to get dressed and go home. Which I did. And I feel A-OK today.

Such excitement on a Tuesday night! Honestly, though, you know what? I felt sort of silly going to the hospital just because of some Braxton-Hicks contractions – I’m nervous about bothering people generally, and don’t want to overreact to totally ordinary things…but hey, it’s my first time doing this stuff, and if going to the hospital resulted in nothing more than reassurance…well, that’s something.
