Excellent Small-Business Business Practice

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m not a big coffee person – it makes me jittery-er than I already am – but this morning I’ve been getting a slow start, and when I took the dogs out for a walk…well, it just felt like an iced-coffee kinda day. I stopped into Luna Espresso, a little coffee shop that recently opened up on the corner of 1st Avenue and 83rd, and ordered a large iced coffee. “That’ll be $3,” the (very adorable) guy behind the counter told me. I pulled out my wallet, and…sigh. Only a dollar and change. (Yes, Dad, I know: always carry cash.) I was all ready to make my red-faced exit, but the counter guy stopped me. “Don’t worry about it,” he said, handing over a (very delicious) cup of coffee. “Just drop the rest by when you get time later.”

Amazing. With that one gesture of trust, he both made a sale (I’m running out right now to bring over the rest of the money) and generated customer loyalty (you better believe that I’ll be stopping in again). It’s businesses like this one that deserve our support.
