w/ Tanya Wenman Steel

Chatting with Epicurious.com Editor-in-Chief Tanya Wenman Steel at the Ultimate NYC Lunch Break event. We got to talking about Indian food, and I confessed that while Kendrick really loves it, I’m a little intimidated by the idea of cooking Indian. She assured me that Epicurious has plenty of easy Indian recipes…so I think I might try one this weekend. Any suggestions for what I should try to make? Dishes that don’t require twenty trips to various obscure supermarkets are preferred.

Pulled-Pork Sandwiches from Hill Country

This was my other favorite dish: pulled-pork sandwiches with coleslaw and pickles (I am a crazy, crazy pickle aficionado) from Hill Country Barbecue. I’ve written about my love for pulled pork here before…so let’s just say my affection has grown still deeper.

Mermaid Inn Lobster Rolls

These lobster rolls from The Mermaid Inn were the hit of the event. My mother is allergic to shellfish, and just about wept when she saw them. I had two. Sorry, mom!

Epicurious Event

This afternoon, I was very, very, very fortunate to be invited to Epicurious.com’s Ultimate NYC Lunch Break event. I brought Mom, because there’s no one I know who likes eating more. The food was to die for – Tabla, Rickshaw Dumpling Bar, The Mermaid Inn, and The Treats Truck all made appearances. And man, did we partake.

Gap cardigan, Memoi leggings, Bakers boots, vintage and Moma necklaces, vintage scarf (on bag), Miu Miu bag.

Vodka Infusion Storage Idea

You can store your vodka infusions in hermetic jars like these from The Container Store, which are extremely wallet-friendly. If you’d like to do something a little more upscale, take a look at www.infused-vodka.com – the infusion jars aren’t exactly cheap, but they’re really beautiful and would make a fantastic gift (I love the Verona style with the spigot).

Pineapple Vodka Infusion

A couple of weeks ago I met a girl, Judy, who makes her own vodka infusions. I sampled her pineapple infusion and…unbelievable. I’m not much of a vodka-sipper, but this tasted like dessert.

PINEAPPLE VODKA INFUSION

Cut up a pineapple into chunks and submerge in the container of your choice with the contents of a large bottle of vodka (you can use a more inexpensive brand than usual, because you’re going to end up mostly just tasting the pineapple anyway). Cover and set aside. After 4 days, remove the pineapple chunks and place them in your freezer (these can be used as ice cubes later). Cut up a new pineapple and add to the vodka. Infuse for another 4-5 days. Serve straight up, or with pineapple-vodka ice cubes.

Link: Most/Least Hydrating Beverages

This article from green living website Care2 describes the most hydrating beverages (such as water, herbal teas, and fruit juices) and the least hydrating (such as coffee, alcoholic beverages, milk, and soft drinks). I have a (weird) tendency to head for milk when I’m thirsty…so this is good info to know.
