Accessible Decor: Balancing Masculine & Feminine

Awhile back, my girlfriend moved in with her fiance and inherited a lot of his large, heavy furniture. I was over one evening, and she asked me for my opinion on how to make the apartment look a bit more balanced.

My suggestions:

– Pick up some plants and flowers;

– Go for sheer curtains to let in more light;

– Add texture with pillows and throws;

– Consider painting an accent wall in a bright color.

I love it when apartments successfully balance the masculine and feminine – they often skew one way or the other, of course, but the contrast between strong shapes and soft details can be so striking.

Like this:

I think this apartment does it perfectly. It features exposed brick walls, leather couches, wood and iron elements, and a dark floor…but the residents added feminine touches with delicate vases and end tables, chairs upholstered in a soft, romantic grey velvet, and straight-from-nature accessories like flowers and seashells.

Stunning.
