Our dining room was a surprise to me. It’s about six times larger than any dining room I’ve had ever before in my life – almost strangely large, given that the house itself is not especially massive – and when we first loaded our furniture in I had no idea what to do with it, because our dining room table, as much as I love it, looked like doll furniture. We have a massive dining room table in our near future, but in the meantime I decided to make the dining room feel a little less cavernous and empty by creating a sidebar area next to the table.
I’ve never had the space for a sidebar before, and this is pretty unfortunate…because you know what a sidebar is? An opportunity to create a cool little display of weird stuff. And weird stuff is something that I happen to have in spades. (At the moment, our sidebar display includes a massive pinecone and a toy dinosaur that I painted gold and filled with succulent cuttings, a cake plate filled with oranges, a sculpture that we bought on our honeymoon, and my crystal ball from The Wicca Years.) And above the sidebar, I hung a housewarming gift sent over to us from the photographer Gray Malin – his spectacular, sculptural San Francisco Nude Beach print. It’s GORGEOUS. I can’t stop staring at it.
If you head over to Gray’s blog today, you can check out an interview with me featuring a bunch more shots of our dining room – and if you like his work, they have a huuuuge sale going on now: 30% off of all beach aerial images, including framing (enter BEACH30 at checkout).
Below are some of my favorite shots from the A La Plage Collection. (And if anyone’s in the market for a print to decorate a nursery – or is just in the mood for a serious dose of whimsy – you have to check out the Up And Away Collection.)
