I took this PhotoBooth shot of my engagement ring a couple of days after Kendrick and I got engaged (I was still living in California at the time, and wanted to send a picture to a few of my NY girlfriends – I waited to tell my parents until I saw them in person).
A few weeks after we started dating, Kendrick came out to LA to visit me, and we decided to drive to Las Vegas to spend the night. He proposed in our hotel room at three o’clock in the morning, but had no ring because he had no idea that he was going to do it until the words were coming out of his mouth. We took my mom’s old sapphire engagement ring, which I wore on my right ring finger, and switched it to my left, and went running down to the lobby to celebrate with some champagne (and a raucous group of bachelorettes). After a few hours of sleep, we headed to a pawn shop off of the Strip, where I found the ring of my dreams. It came in a fluorescent blue box, which I still have tucked away in my nightstand.
Outside the pawn shop, Kendrick got down on his knee to propose again “properly.” Immediately after I said “yes,” a man walked up to us and tapped me on the shoulder.
“Excuse me,” he said, “but did that guy just propose to you…in a parking lot?”
“Oh, no no no no no…he proposed last night, he’s just giving me the ring now.”
The man shook his head. “Thank God,” he said. “Because I was going to tell you to say no.”
