While big solitaires are wonderful, I think it’s even more romantic (and much more in keeping with the true meaning of what you’re doing) to abandon the idea that an engagement ring has to break the bank — that three-months-salary thing is ridiculous. It’s far more important to find something that’s uniquely you (whether that’s a Tiffany rock or a thrift-store find…or even, as reader Jennette said, an “engagement necklace”); something that symbolizes what you’re building together.
