My top picks for where to eat in Hell’s Kitchen:
– Casellula: A cheese and wine cafe with the most inspired, tastebud-exploding pairings I’ve ever had. The “Pig’s Ass Sandwich” is also quite yummy.
– Uncle Nick’s: a Greek restaurant on 9th Avenue with to-die-for mussels in white wine and garlic sauce (warning: you will smell like garlic for days).
– Riposo: A casually chic wine bar that happens to have one of the least expensive and best brunches in the area (please try the eggs benedict served over prosciutto and melted mozzarella on garlicky toast).
– Amarone: An above-average Italian restaurant with wayyyy above-average fresh pasta specials (I love the orecchiette with leeks, prosciutto, and smoked mozzarella in a pink sauce).
– Rudy’s: Not technically a restaurant, but the ultimate dive bar offers free hot dogs and the cheapest pitchers around.
– Esca: Expensive, yes, but this Mario Batali spot has an elegant vibe, a knowledgeable and friendly staff, and a whole branzino cooked in sea salt that frequently pops up in my dreams.
– Trattoria Casa di Isacco: The frenzied location – right next to the Port Authority – provides a fascinating contrast to the extraordinary experience you’ll find inside. Review here. Video here.
– 44 & X and its more casual sister restaurant, 44 1/2: Interesting twists on American classics in an impossibly chic setting. Review here. Video here.
– Westway Diner: The site of my very first date with Kendrick, this place is everything you love about diners.
Any other suggestions?
