A very exciting Monday night: catching up on all the button-sewing I’ve been putting off.
HOW TO SEW ON A BUTTON (laugh if you like, but not everyone knows how to do this):
1. Thread and knot your needle. Draw the needle through the fabric so that the knot is on the inside (hidden).
2. Anchor the thread by making a couple of stitches in the fabric, right where the button is going to be located.
3. Bring the needle up through the button. Lay a “spacer” (another needle, a toothpick, whatever…although you’ll need a thicker spacer for thicker fabric) across the top of the button, and then bring the needle back down through the button so that the thread goes over the spacer.
4. Repeat step 3 to make about 6-8 stitches over the spacer (do this again for the other two holes if it’s a 4-hole button).
5. End on the inside of the fabric by anchoring again (making a few stitches on the same spot).
Tip: If you are missing a button, take a button from the bottom of the garment and replace that one with as close of a match as you can find – it’ll be less obvious that it’s a different button if it’s not front-and-center.
