I borrowed Carrie Fisher’s Wishful Drinking from Stephen at 8PM on Saturday night, and had finished it by 11AM Sunday morning. Think I enjoyed it?

The book chronicles Fisher’s decidedly troubled life – painkiller addictions, manic-depression, and a friend who died in her bed, among other things – from childhood (she’s the daughter of Eddie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds) to motherhood (the father of her daughter left her for another man). I only have one complaint: Fisher is clearly determined to laugh her troubles away (at the beginning of chapter 1, she declares, “If my life wasn’t funny it would just be true, and that is unacceptable”), but to me the book, brave and forthcoming as it is, fails to really probe the depths of Fisher’s unusual life. It’s a quick, laugh-out-loud read, but Fisher, despite her claims that she is laying herself completely bare, still seems to be hiding behind a mask of humor.

I want to know more.
