This is probably the category that I had the most fun with this year, for pretty obvious reasons.
I mean, we moved.
Transitioning from a fourth-floor walkup that we pretended was a two-bedroom but was actually a one-bedroom with a hallway that was slightly wider in one spot (and that had a toilet in the kitchen and a bathtub where the closet should have been; how weird is that?) to a for-real home was right up there with marrying Kendrick and having Indy in the most exciting moments of my life.
And while the end result was more than worth the drama, saying that it was not an easy process is an understatement.
Also, holy god, is home ownership ever a pain in the butt. A worth-it pain in the butt, but still very much a pain in the butt.
I mean, people told me it would be a pretty major challenge…but it continues to throw fun little surprises my way. Like falling trees. And de-icing my front steps, which was a thing that just magically happened when we lived in an apartment building with a super, and yet this morning somehow resulted in two boots full of environmentally-friendly-yet-very-uncomfortable-on-one’s-toes salt. (How did I manage to pour salt into my boots instead of on the ground? Can’t tell you.)
And then the other day the heat stopped working, and so I called my contractor (who is my new best friend because he’s extremely nice and fields the occasional call from me asking things like “Why did my heat just stop working?”), and it turns out that oil tanks don’t magically refill themselves. And that they cost somewhere in the realm of a grand to deal with. Hello!
Of course, an enormous part of my life this year was spent writing and shooting two seasons of Jordan In The House, which was absolutely the most exciting thing ever. And exhausting. And an opportunity that I’m endlessly grateful for, because it resulted in some crazy experiences, a wonderful friendship with my videographer, John, and a visual diary of the overwhelming and awesome experience of purchasing and decorating a first home.
