Kendrick giving my mom her weekly piano lesson.This piano, a 1928 Steinway that got its start in vaudeville theater, has been in our family since the 1930s, when my great-grandfather bought it for my grandmother. My grandmother later became a Carnegie Hall pianist, and the piano went with her and my grandpa wherever they traveled, from New Jersey to California to Costa Rica, and finally landed in Hell’s Kitchen, where my parents live. I played when I was younger, but now mom is the (A+, I might add) student in the family. The piano is also a swell hiding place – when I was little, I used to tuck my journals away in the underside.
