This is me on my birthday (hence the very attractive glasses) arranging a bouquet of peonies and lilacs that my girlfriend Lauren brought for me. Peonies – especially pink ones – are my absolute favorite flower in the world. I begged the florist for my wedding to figure out a way to get them, but apparently they’re not in season in August (sob) – only April-June.
If you’re curious what’s in season now, here are some timely options:
Asters
Calla Lilies
Cosmos
Dahlias
Daisies
Delphiniums
Freesia
Geraniums
Gardenia
Hydrangeas
Iris
Jacobs Ladder
Larkspur
Queen Anne’s Lace
Roses
Shasta daises
Stock
Sunflower
Zinnias

Incidentally, this was the night I met the lovely Julia Allison. After a dinner party at my place, my girlfriends and I headed to a party downtown, at a friend’s apartment. I walked into the party soaked to the skin from a surprise thunderstorm, and given that I was wearing a white dress that had by that point turned entirely see-through, you can imagine what kind of mood I was in. And then a college friend of mine ushered me over to an intimidatingly stunning brunette in a sweeping, flowered dress who I just “had to meet.” We hit it off instantly, and within minutes I handed her one of the crystal bracelets that I had given to the guests at my party (I’m wearing one in the picture above) to show my gratitude for having met a woman who impressed me so thoroughly, and so immediately, for her kindness, obvious intelligence, and genuine interest in and appreciation for others.
And the rest is history. Friends like Julia come along very rarely in a lifetime.
